Will Spain Secure First Place in the Group?
Even before the tournament began, the prediction was made that Uruguay and Spain in Group H would occupy the top two spots after three matchdays. Ahead of their head-to-head matchup on Thursday night into Friday, that’s exactly how things are shaping up. The reigning European champions are the only team with four points so far and thus have the best chance of advancing to the knockout stage as group winners.
Despite the fact that Uruguay is still waiting for its first three-point win after two matchdays and fell well short of its potential against both Saudi Arabia (1–1) and Cape Verde (2–2), Bielsa’s squad doesn’t seem to be without a chance against one of the hottest favorites for the World Cup title. At least, that’s the conclusion drawn by the experts’ Uruguay vs. Spain score predictions. Peter, for example, believes the underdog will win 1–0; Guido Buchwald thinks a draw is possible; while Benny Lauth, on the other hand, is firmly backing coach Luis de la Fuente’s team.
What could work in Spain’s favor is the fact that, under certain circumstances, even a draw might not be enough for Uruguay to advance to the Round of 16. If Cape Verde were to defeat Saudi Arabia in the other match, Uruguay would slip to third place and would have to set their sights on other stadiums from then on. That is something they want to avoid at all costs, although it’s unlikely the South Americans will deviate from their physical, tackle-heavy style of play.
Uruguay vs. Spain AI Prediction
Meanwhile, the AI thinks it’s quite likely that the 2.5-goal line will be surpassed. The AI assigns Spain an xG value of 1.86 and Uruguay 0.85. Added together, this results in a total of 2.71 goals, which suggests betting on Over 2.5 goals.
Uruguay – Statistics & Current Form
After two draws against Saudi Arabia (1–1) and Cape Verde (2–2), Uruguay already has its back against the wall. The draw against World Cup newcomer Cape Verde, in particular, was perceived as a bitter setback both at home and in the media. The main criticisms center on a lack of efficiency in front of goal and recurring defensive errors. Even coach Marcelo Bielsa spoke of a “disorganized” team performance, which further underscores that this perennial World Cup participant is currently far from its best form.
Will Spain’s style of play benefit Uruguay’s stability?
However, I now expect the “Celeste” to step up their game against the Spaniards of all teams. On the one hand, because the South Americans have already proven in the past that they perform well under pressure. On the other hand, though, given that Bielsa’s squad—unlike in the first two matchdays—is not forced to take the initiative with the ball itself.
Against Spain’s possession-oriented style of play, the Sky Blues can defend deeper, build a multi-player block, and focus on a compact defense. This tactical approach could lead to a low-scoring match between Uruguay and Spain, which would serve as a solid foundation for further match combos. It would therefore be conceivable to combine the Under 3.5 with the Double Chance X or Spain.

Spain – Statistics & Current Form
Spain heads into the match against Uruguay with significantly more momentum. Although the World Cup began with a disappointing 0-0 draw against Cape Verde—which the Spanish press described as an “embarrassment” and a “disaster”—the team’s response was impressive. In their 4–0 victory over Saudi Arabia, La Roja showed its usual form: dominant in possession, aggressive in pressing, and much more determined in the final third. By halftime, the Spaniards had already made their dominance clear.
Success returned in the second group stage match with Lamine Yamal
Looking back over the past few months, Spain remains among the top contenders for the title despite some minor fluctuations. Following their European Championship triumph, Coach de la Fuente’s team has established itself as one of the strongest sides in the world and boasts tremendous quality across nearly every position. As a result, there is once again great confidence back home following the decisive victory over Saudi Arabia. The media view the match against Uruguay as a true litmus test, but believe that a Spain playing at its usual level—led by Yamal and an in-form Mikel Oyarzabal—is currently one of the most well-rounded teams in the tournament.
Mikel Oyarzabal, in particular, showed a clear improvement in his performance in the second group stage match. While the Real Sociedad forward had absolutely no touch of the ball in the first 30 minutes of the tournament opener against Cape Verde, he has now found the back of the net twice. In the final group stage match, I therefore expect him to be in the starting lineup again, which is why I’m backing the Spain vs. Uruguay odds on another goal from Oyarzabal.

Uruguay – Spain Head-to-Head Record
There have been seven international matches between these two nations so far. Uruguay has never managed to win any of them. Spain has four wins, while there have been three draws.
However, the last head-to-head match dates back to 2013, when Spain—then the reigning World and European champion—prevailed 2-1 at the FIFA Confederations Cup. In six of the seven matches mentioned, the “Furia Roja” scored at least twice. Nevertheless, this has very limited relevance to Saturday morning’s Spain vs. Uruguay betting odds.
Uruguay – Spain Prediction
In my view, there’s a lot pointing in Spain’s favor ahead of this final group stage match. After a weak start against Cape Verde, the Spaniards showed the right response and impressively demonstrated in their 4–0 win over Saudi Arabia why they’re considered among the top favorites for the World Cup title. Above all, the return of Lamine Yamal has visibly added more dynamism to their offensive play. At the same time, Luis de la Fuente’s team possesses greater individual quality and currently appears significantly more solid than their opponent.
Nevertheless, I think it’s very likely that the Spaniards will have to be patient. Uruguay will defend deeper—and thus presumably more compactly—than they did in the first two matchdays against nations considered weaker. Since we also have to consider the situation going into the match—and a draw might be enough for Bielsa’s team—I’m going with an “Under 2.5 goals” bet for the Spain vs. Uruguay match. At Bwin, you’ll get odds of 1.68, which I’m betting four notional units on.
