Will American power tennis prevail?
With Alexander Zverev’s historic French Open triumph, the clay-court season comes to an end and the ATP Tour shifts to the traditionally short grass-court season for a few weeks. At the BOSS Open in Stuttgart, several German players are looking to make their mark. However, a Daniel Altmaier vs. Frances Tiafoe prediction that the player from Kempen will eliminate the number six seed does not look promising.
On top of that, the German has a poor record on grass, and his playing style (lots of spin and defensive baseline play) is simply much better suited to clay. “Big Foe,” on the other hand, plays a varied, serve-heavy power tennis that is practically made for grass. Accordingly, the prediction for Daniel Altmaier vs. Frances Tiafoe is that the man from Maryland will clear the first hurdle and send the player from Kempen packing in the first round.
Admittedly, Daniel Altmaier did manage to take a set from the American in two of their three previous meetings. On grass, however, that is likely to be significantly more difficult, as the player from Kempen—whose serve is not quite at the absolute top level—would have to serve with great tactical discipline and consistently put pressure on Frances Tiafoe on the return to steal a set. On grass, that’s an enormous challenge against “Big Foe,” which is why we’re simply betting on a straight 2-0 victory for the American.
Although at least one set has gone to a tiebreak in two of the three previous meetings between the two players, the mere fact that Daniel Altmaier would force a tiebreak against the American—who, with his strong first-serve percentage, should be able to dictate the pace quite effortlessly—is, in our estimation, anything but likely.
Daniel Altmaier – Frances Tiafoe Head-to-Head Record
Head to Head: 0:3
The two players have faced each other three times on the ATP Tour so far, and in all three cases, Frances Tiafoe prevailed over the German—most recently in the round of 16 at the 2025 French Open with a clean 3-0 victory.
Prior to that, Daniel Altmaier did manage to take a set from the American at the 2023 Australian Open and the 2023 Rome Masters. Now, however, the two players are set to face off on grass for the first time, which certainly does not work in the Kempen native’s favor.
Daniel Altmaier – Frances Tiafoe Prediction
If this match were taking place on clay, Daniel Altmaier’s chances would undoubtedly be significantly better, even though he has lost both of his previous clay-court matches against “Big Foe”—most recently at the 2025 French Open by a score of 0-3. However, since this match in Stuttgart is taking place on grass, we believe the Kempen native’s already slim chances of victory are plummeting to rock bottom.
Daniel Altmaier’s serve is generally too weak and inconsistent for this surface, while Frances Tiafoe’s powerful tennis should be able to neutralize the German’s otherwise strong return game.
Although the euphoria following Zverev’s Grand Slam victory is likely to be high at a tennis tournament in Germany even in the absence of the French Open champion, we do not expect the player from Kempen to benefit from this in Stuttgart. His performance data from the 2026 season is too weak, as are his career records on grass, so we expect a 2-0 victory for the American, who already won the BOSS Open in 2023.
