Can the Argentine break the German’s consistency?
Marco Trungelliti—who fell from grace eleven years ago after reporting three compatriots to the tennis governing body, leading to their suspension for match-fixing—is enjoying a second wind in the 2026 season at the ripe age of 36. In fact, he became the oldest tennis player of all time to break into the top 100 of the ATP world rankings for the first time. It is therefore quite conceivable that the prediction of a victory for the Argentine will also come true in the match between Marco Trungelliti and Yannick Hanfmann, as Trungelliti made a strong statement in the first round by completely overwhelming his compatriot Juan Manuel Cerúndolo (ATP 50) 2-0 (6-2, 6-1).
Yannick Hanfmann also got off to a great start in Kitzbühel, defeating Austrian local hero Lukas Neumayer 2-0 (7-6, 6-4) in a close match spanning 23 games. Particularly impressive: With 16 aces, the Karlsruhe native won 91 percent of the points on his first serve. On paper, the world No. 52 is thus the favorite, although predicting that Yannick Hanfmann will advance to the quarterfinals in his match against Marco Trungelliti is a risky proposition.
If the Argentine manages to neutralize the Karlsruhe native’s serve and draw him out of his shell in long rallies, we can certainly expect a closely contested match. To cover as many possibilities as possible, we’re therefore placing a positive handicap of +1.5 sets on Marco Trungelliti, who also won their only previous meeting with Yannick Hanfmann in straight sets, 2-0.
However, the German also knows exactly how he needs to adjust his game on the challenging clay court in Tyrol to be successful. We also don’t consider it overly likely that he’ll lose 0–2 to the Argentine again, as he did a year and a half ago in Rio de Janeiro. It therefore makes sense to predict that this round of 16 match will go the full distance of three sets.

The 36-year-old Argentine is clearly in the form of his life and, moreover, proved a year and a half ago in Brazil that he can break Yannick Hanfmann’s consistency.
However, the player from Fächerstadt has also gotten off to a strong start in Kitzbühel. Winning 91 percent of points on his first serve sent a clear message. Moreover, the physically strong German already played on Monday and was able to use Tuesday to recover, while Marco Trungelliti has to compete on two consecutive days.
Nevertheless, we believe the Argentine will win at least one set. Therefore, we see good value in betting on the player from Santiago del Estero with a positive handicap of +1.5 sets.
