Will the player from Karlsruhe take down another Argentine?
The 34-year-old German just proved in the round of 16 that he can handle the typical Argentine clay-court grinders when he knocked out Marco Trungelliti 2-0. Now, just one day later, he has to face another Argentine. If Yannick Hanfmann’s tip for a victory over Sebastián Báez comes true, things could—curiously enough—continue seamlessly from there. A possible semifinal opponent would be Mariano Navone. Meanwhile, in the upper half of the tournament bracket, another Argentine, Tómas Martín Etcheverry, is still in the running.
While clay is statistically the Karlsruhe native’s best surface (a 55 percent win rate compared to 43 percent on hard courts and 40 percent on grass), he isn’t a typical clay-court player. His path to the quarterfinals—marked by two narrow 2-1 victories—was also significantly more arduous than that of Yannick Hanfmann, who, thanks in part to his strong serve, secured two straight 2-0 wins and decided one set in a tiebreak in each match.
Nevertheless, the Argentine clay-court specialist is generally capable of maintaining a high level of intensity and can pose a particular threat to the German if he manages to drag out the match and wear down the Karlsruhe native physically.
However, last year’s match between the two players—which the Karlsruhe native won 2-1—already showed that the high altitude in Tyrol suits the German slightly better. With his powerful serve, the 34-year-old will also pick up some free points, which could tip the scales in a close match.
