Will Luxembourg finish World Cup qualifying with zero points?
Monday evening’s World Cup qualifier between Northern Ireland and Luxembourg is now only of statistical interest. In Germany’s Group A, the decisions have been made in that both Northern Ireland and Luxembourg no longer have a chance of finishing in the top two places. Nevertheless, both teams have their own motivation for the upcoming clash at the atmospheric Windsor Park in Belfast.
For the home side, it’s about building confidence for the playoffs in March 2026. Thanks to their group victory in the UEFA Nations League, they will definitely get another chance to secure their ticket to the 2026 World Cup. Meanwhile, the visitors from the Grand Duchy are determined not to end their World Cup qualification campaign without at least one point. In fact, ahead of the Northern Ireland vs. Luxembourg match, I would not categorically rule out the underdogs picking up a point.
Coach Jeff Strasser’s team played with great enthusiasm and courage in Friday evening’s home game against the DFB team. In the first 45 minutes in particular, the world number 97 had several excellent chances to take the lead against the 2014 world champions. Although it should not be overlooked that the “Red Lions” have been waiting for a win for eight international games and have scored only one goal in the World Cup qualifiers so far, I still believe they are capable of scoring a goal and possibly even securing a draw.
In my opinion, the fact that the hosts may have lost some of their momentum serves as a basis for this argument. Especially when you consider that Friday evening’s decisive match against Slovakia for second place was only lost due to a goal conceded in the 90th minute. To make matters worse, the defense chief Daniel Ballard from the Premier League surprise team received a red card and will therefore be missing on Monday.
Because there is officially nothing at stake and the visitors, who now also have some quality players, are, in my opinion, being treated a little too harshly by the best betting providers, I see more value in the Northern Ireland vs. Luxembourg odds on the double chance X2.
However, if you have more faith in the proven home strength of “Norn Iron,” an alternative approach could be to bet on over goals. Both teams have nothing to lose, will probably play openly and want to give their fans something to cheer about. In addition, ahead of the insignificant match between Northern Ireland and Luxembourg, the betting odds for at least three goals in the game are very high.
Northern Ireland – Luxembourg Head-to-head record
Another factor pointing to a high-scoring game is the fact that there were four goals in the first leg in Luxembourg two months ago. Northern Ireland won 3-1 away, benefiting from a yellow-red card against the home side and even missing a penalty. In three of the last four head-to-head matches since 2022, the over 2.5 would have paid off.

Northern Ireland – Luxembourg Tip
There is no need for artificially generated excitement in Northern Ireland’s home game against Luxembourg on Monday evening. While the parallel game between Germany and Slovakia is still about winning the group, the other match in Group A has the character of a friendly game. Despite missing out on qualification for next year’s finals via the original route, the disappointment on both sides is rather limited. Northern Ireland will at least get another chance via the Nations League, and Luxembourg have shown once again that they are no longer the typical football minnows they were 15-20 years ago.
I expect a relatively lively match with goals on both sides. The home side may lack a little bit of finishing, but Strasser’s team will be just as brave as they were on Friday evening against the DFB team. This leads me to suggest betting on over 2.5 goals between Northern Ireland and Luxembourg. I’m betting six units on Oddset’s 1.80 and wouldn’t even be surprised if the “Red Lions” take a point away from Belfast.
