Will Sporting make things exciting again against Bodø/Glimt?
Anyone who hasn’t yet watched a Champions League match featuring the sensational Norwegian team this season might be surprised by the debutants’ style of play. In our Sporting Lisbon vs. Bodø/Glimt prediction, we’ll take a closer look at the visitors’ unique qualities.
Unlike, among others, the bookmakers with German licenses, we don’t see head coach Kjetil Knutsen’s team as a massive underdog in our Sporting Lisbon vs. Bodø/Glimt prediction—their performances in the Champions League so far have been too impressive.
The Yellow Lightning also put on a remarkable performance in the first leg of the Round of 16 on their home turf. The Norwegian side deservedly won 3-0, had built up a clear advantage in expected goals (2.8:0.6 xG), and sent the dejected Portuguese back on the plane.
Anyone who, given this excellent starting position, expects a cautious approach from Knutsen’s squad in the second leg is likely not yet very familiar with the DNA of the Eliteserien club. Full-throttle soccer is to be expected in every match—no matter what the circumstances.
The Portuguese Lions’ hopes rest on their proven home strength. Head coach Rui Borges has won all four of his team’s previous Champions League home games (11-3 goals). This was the foundation for their surprising seventh-place finish at the end of the league season.
Sporting Lisbon vs. Bodø/Glimt AI Prediction
There was little sign of the Portuguese Lions’ otherwise successful defense in the first leg. Even when AI takes into account the data from the 0-3 loss, the home team’s expected defensive performance ranks among the top 10 of all Champions League participants (1.26 expected goals conceded per game). This is likely one of the reasons why the Sporting Lisbon vs. Bodø/Glimt AI prediction indicates value for “Both Teams to Score – No.”
Sporting Lisbon – Stats & Current Form
At the national level, Rui Borges’s men took a break. Last weekend’s league match was postponed to allow more time to prepare for the decisive Round of 16 second leg. Not much should really surprise the second-place team in the Portuguese league anymore.
However, the match won’t be any easier despite the extra preparation time. Sporting must prepare for an intense, aggressively pressing team from Norway that won’t sit back and wait despite their comfortable lead.
The home side, however, is still capable of producing big performances in the Champions League. During the league phase, the Green-Whites beat reigning CL champions PSG (2-1), returned with three points from Bilbao (3-2), and earned a point away in Turin against Juve (1-1).
Sometimes the goal threat is missing
We noted just one decent scoring opportunity for the Portuguese in the first leg. Following a corner, Luis Suárez was first to the ball in the sixth minute and blasted it over the crossbar from about eleven meters out – 0.21 expected goals.
By the end of the match, this figure had risen to a total of 0.6 expected goals—too few against the attacking team near the Arctic Circle. On numerous occasions in recent weeks, the Lions have shown too little goal threat.
Sporting generated fewer than one expected goal in three of their four previous Champions League matches. On top of that, the defense has slipped. Overall, the hosts held their opponents to fewer than one expected goal in five of nine CL matches. However, Rui Borges’s squad finished three of their previous four appearances with more than one expected goal conceded. This trend continues in our Sporting Lisbon vs. Bodø/Glimt prediction.

Bodø/Glimt – Statistics & Current Form
200 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle lies a club that has been captivating European soccer fans lately. Yet their first Champions League campaign got off to a somewhat rocky start. Bodø/Glimt went six consecutive matchdays without a win (3 draws, 3 losses).
Undeterred by the lack of results, the Polar Express then picked up the pace, finished the league phase in 23rd place, and earned a spot in the knockout round. There, the Yellow Lightning drove Inter Milan to the brink of madness with their style of play and knocked them out of the Champions League (5-2 on aggregate over two legs).
The Europa League semifinalist from the previous year secured its fifth consecutive Champions League victory at home against Sporting Lisbon (3-0). These successes were no fluke—so far, Bodø/Glimt has scored 1.2 expected goals or more in every CL matchup. This also affects the Sporting Lisbon vs. Bodø/Glimt betting odds.
Consistency at the highest level
Head coach Kjetil Knutsen has been coaching the team since 2018. That was when the club returned to the Norwegian top flight. Since then, the northern Norwegians have won four national championships and finished as runners-up twice. The club focuses on Norwegian players and promotes players from its own youth system. The goal: approximately one-third of the professional squad should come from the club’s own youth ranks.
Continuity was also evident during the winning streak in the Champions League.
In all five successful Champions League matches, Knutsen fielded the exact same starting lineup. Top scorer Kasper Högh (5 Champions League goals) consistently received strong support from Jens Petter Hauge. The latter recorded six direct goal contributions (4 goals, 2 assists) in his six previous Champions League appearances.
In addition to their well-known home strength, they have recently posted impressive results in away matches. Bodø/Glimt won consecutive away matches against Atlético Madrid (2-1) and Inter Milan (2-1)—no easy tasks and a good basis for our Sporting Lisbon vs. Bodø/Glimt prediction on the “Double Chance X2.”

Sporting Lisbon – Bodø/Glimt Head-to-Head Record
Portuguese teams seem to suit the visitors quite well. Sporting Lisbon is the Yellow Blazes’ third Portuguese opponent at the European level. The Knutsen squad won all three matches (3-2 vs. Porto, 2-1 vs. Braga, 3-0 vs. Sporting Lisbon). Also notable: The Norwegians scored “Over 1.5 goals” in each match.
Sporting Lisbon – Bodø/Glimt Tip
Bodø/Glimt conceded no more than 0.6 expected goals in the first leg. This marked the first time this Champions League season that the surprise Round of 16 contender held an opponent to fewer than one expected goal. From the Lions’ perspective, there is something to make up for.
Their home form is their best hope. Sporting has won all four home games this Champions League season, scored 11 of their 17 goals at home, and conceded only three of their 14 goals at Estadio Jose Alvalade. However, their form heading into the second leg is concerning.
Sporting has gone two competitive matches without a win (1D, 1L) and has conceded over 1.5 goals in both matches against Braga (2-2) and Bodø/Glimt (0-3). The defense, which was so successful at the start of the Champions League season, has conceded an increasing number of predictable goals as the league campaign has progressed—a trend we saw confirmed in the first leg of the Round of 16.
