Will the Tifosi relive the nightmare?
Four European nations will secure their spots in the 2026 World Cup on Tuesday night. The other four national teams, however, will come away empty-handed and will have to watch the major event this summer from afar, from their sofas at home. Rarely in soccer does a match carry more of a “do-or-die” atmosphere than the World Cup playoff finals. Consequently, the issue of pressure naturally plays a major role and must therefore be taken into account intensively in the Bosnia vs. Italy prediction.
Although the Squadra Azzurra must play away in Zenica, the Italians are under significantly more pressure than the home team. After missing out on the World Cup in 2018 and 2022—both times, incidentally, also in the playoffs—the 2006 World Cup champions face the threat of another major disaster. Strictly speaking, Gattuso’s squad—which has also had a proverbial knife held to its throat by the domestic media—has little to gain but everything to lose. Not an easy starting position ahead of an absolute do-or-die match in which there are no guarantees over 90 minutes plus extra time.
Even before kickoff in the Bosnia vs. Italy match, my prediction is therefore influenced by this mental and psychological factor, which should not be underestimated. Aside from that, the “Zmajevi” also have a lot to offer on the soccer field. The team led by former Bundesliga star Sergej Barbarez has been undefeated in its last five matches (3-2-0); looking back at the past twelve international matches, the “Golden Lilies” have only come up short twice.
Among other things, there have also been notable draws against Austria and the Netherlands to celebrate over the past two years. The Bosnian squad, packed with numerous quality players, is therefore definitely not just cannon fodder. Especially not in front of a home crowd in the intimate stadium in Zenica.
Also interesting: In their last twelve matches, the Bosnians have always found the back of the net. In four of their last five home games, both teams scored. Reason enough to consider the odds on “Both Teams to Score” ahead of the Bosnia vs. Italy clash.
But the Italian national team is not lacking in momentum either. They have won seven of their last eight international matches. On the road, the Italians have emerged victorious in six of their previous eight matches. Under Gattuso, the former world champions have scored 21 goals in seven matches—exactly three on average. However, on two occasions—against Norway and Israel—they also conceded four (!) goals. In 13 of Italy’s last 17 international matches, the Over 2.5 would have paid out.
For those who still find the arguments for a relatively high-scoring final with goals from both sides insufficient, the obvious value odds of 2.52 on the Double Chance 1X in the Betano app are hard to ignore. It was already clear against Northern Ireland that the Italians’ mental state has a massive impact on their performance. Playing away against an opponent considered to be of higher quality, Tonali and Co. might even end up getting nervous. Against this backdrop, I believe the betting odds for an upset between Bosnia and Italy are set far too high.
Bosnia – Italy Head-to-Head Record
Since 2019, the national teams have faced each other five times. With four wins and one draw, the Squadra Azzurra clearly has the upper hand. Ironically, it was in Bosnia that the Italians managed to win both times by a margin of two or even three goals.
The most recent encounter in the summer of 2024, however, was much closer. Thanks to a goal by Frattesi, the 2006 World Cup champions won 1-0 in Empoli against the Bosnians, who could now qualify for a World Cup finals for only the second time in their association’s history.

Bosnia – Italy Prediction
It was only thanks to a last-minute goal by Edin Dzeko that the Bosnians forced extra time in the semifinal in Wales and ultimately a penalty shootout, which the “Golden Lilies” won. Hopes rest once again on the Schalke star on Tuesday evening in Zenica.
Overall, I don’t think Barbarez’s team stands no chance against the Italians, who are under pressure. The Bosnians have scored at least once in twelve consecutive games. The visitors from Italy have also shown defensive weaknesses time and again. I therefore recommend the Bosnia vs. Italy tip: “Both teams to score.”
