How will top favorite Canada start the World Championship?

Hockey powerhouse Canada enters the tournament, and in our Canada vs. Sweden tip, the Maple Leafs will certainly be looking to make amends for their unfortunate loss to the U.S. in the Olympic final.

To that end, they once again have plenty of NHL star power on board with top talent Celebrini (top scorer at the Olympics), Matthew Barzahl, John Tavares, and Evan Bouchard, and the bookmakers already consider them the top favorites to win the title at the 2026 Ice Hockey World Championship.

We’ve also put together the full schedule for the 2026 World Championship so you can get an early look at the Canadians’ path through the tournament. However, they’ll face one of the co-favorites right off the bat in Sweden.

The Swedes, however, are coming to Switzerland with numerous rookies and have chosen not to invite only NHL players. The roster includes six players from the Swiss National League.

Since their last warm-up game against Finland (1-5) was also a bit rough, our prediction for Canada vs. Sweden is an opening-game victory for the favored Canadians. The first face-off of the game is at 4:20 p.m. in Fribourg.

Even bets on a win by a margin of over 1.5 goals are still a good play here, as we see the Canadians as a very strong contender at this World Championship. The betting odds for Canada vs. Sweden are still high enough for that.

Canada – Sweden Head-to-Head Record

The head-to-head record between the two teams is closer than one might expect. Of the last ten direct matchups, six went to Canada, including three of the last four games.

However, while the Swedes lost their last warm-up game as previously mentioned (1-5 against Finland), the Canadians won decisively 6-1 against France.

Canada – Sweden Prediction

This matchup will be exciting for several reasons, including the possibility that the top two picks in the upcoming draft could face off directly: Gavin McKenna for Canada and Ivar Stenberg for Sweden.

Here, too, the Canadian is considered the slightly stronger player, a trend that runs throughout the entire team. That’s why, for Canada vs. Sweden, a bet on Team Canada is our clear recommendation.

Alternatively, we’re betting on Over 5.5 total goals. In their last meeting (5-3), eight goals were scored, and in both of the teams’ most recent warm-up games, that number was also exceeded (6 and 7 goals, respectively, in those two games).
