Will the NBA season kick off with a nail-biter?

The teams look back on last season with mixed feelings. After the regular season, the home team was nothing less than the best team in the Eastern Conference, and the visitors were right behind them. However, they were unable to maintain that strong form in the subsequent playoffs.

For the Pistons, their run in the East ended after the second round, and Boston was even eliminated in the first round. Now, however, both teams are once again among the top teams—at least in the Eastern Conference—and Coach J.B. Bickerstaff’s home team is counting on home-court advantage: Last season, they posted a 78 percent winning percentage in 42 games leading up to the playoffs—the best record in the Eastern Conference!

However, the visitors counter this record as the second-best road team from last season. They also impressed during the preseason. In their four preseason games, Boston came away with nothing but wins—including two against the newly formed powerhouse from Philadelphia featuring LeBron James, Jaylen Brown, and Joel Embiid. It looks like it’ll be a close game in Motown, which is why, for the matchup between the Detroit Pistons and the Boston Celtics, we’re predicting that the visitors won’t lose by more than four points.

Furthermore, the odds on Jayson Tatum scoring more than 25.5 points look promising. With Jaylen Brown’s departure to Philly, the offense now relies even more heavily on the forward. On top of that, this matchup suits him well: In his last four games against Detroit, Tatum consistently surpassed the selected total (37, 27, 31, 38—an average of 33.3 points).

Detroit Pistons – Boston Celtics Head-to-Head Record

Detroit and Boston have faced off once this year. The game took place in Detroit this past January and ended with a narrow 104–103 victory for the Pistons. Thanks to that win, the hosts now have four wins in their last five meetings!

On top of that, they’ve won their last three home games against Boston. Nevertheless, the odds for the upcoming matchup between the Detroit Pistons and the Boston Celtics are very evenly split.

Detroit Pistons – Boston Celtics Pick

Following a disappointing playoff run last season, the hosts have overhauled their roster in several key areas. Among others, veteran Tobias Harris left the franchise.

On the other hand, his role had run its course anyway. In the past, he was expected to support the predominantly young team with his experience. Now, former young players like Cunningham and Duren have long since matured, and the pressure is high in Detroit this season.

The players who have been developed over many years must deliver in the eyes of Pistons fans. However, they’ll face a tough opponent right off the bat in Boston, a team that was involved in a particularly spectacular trade this summer.

Top guard Jaylen Brown was traded to Philadelphia, and in return, the Celtics acquired Paul George, a high-impact small forward. At 36, unlike Brown—the 2024 Finals MVP—he is no longer in his prime, which is why the Celtics also received several draft picks.

Brown’s departure has also ensured that Jayson Tatum is now the undisputed franchise player. The internal pecking order is thus settled, which is another point in favor of the trade, especially since nine-time All-Star George should work well alongside Tatum as a reliable “3-and-D” player.

We therefore continue to view the visitors as a strong team and don’t expect an easy win for the home team. In our opinion, the betting odds for the NBA season opener between Detroit and Boston suggest that the visitors will lose by no more than four points or even kick off the new season with a win.
