Will Birmingham’s upswing continue?

Matchday 2 of the Champions League is here, and we have a prediction ready for the Aston Villa vs. Fenerbahçe match. The home team got off to a disastrous start to the Premier League season, but since their opening Champions League victory in Bruges, their form has been on the rise.

Coach Unai Emery’s squad has won three of their next five games across all competitions. The visitors, however, are also arriving in consistent form and have recently impressed on offense. Examples include the 8-0 win over Eyüpspor on the penultimate matchday and the 3-0 victory in their final warm-up match against Rizespor last Saturday. Nevertheless, we consider the now-stabilized home team to be the stronger side and are therefore predicting a home win for the match between Aston Villa and Fenerbahçe.

Aston Villa – Statistics & Current Form

Last season’s fourth-place finisher in the Premier League got off to an extremely weak start this season, with just one point and one goal after four matchdays. One reason for the slow start was the team’s personnel situation.

Over the summer, due to the Premier League’s “Financial Rules,” Villa had to let go of a string of key players, such as Morgan Rogers to Chelsea and Youri Tielemans to Manchester United. The list easily continues with names like Ezri Konsa and Lucas Digne.

Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez and Ollie Watkins also turned their backs on the club. The departure of the latter striker in particular—who more or less forced his move to the petrodollar paradise known as Saudi Arabia—is a painful blow to the Villans. In his six seasons in Birmingham, Watkins had consistently scored in double digits! No wonder, then, that the offense in particular performed so poorly at the start of the season.

Villa Can Score Goals Again

In the meantime, however, the personnel upheaval at the 1982 European Cup champions has settled down somewhat. Even though the drop in quality remains, Coach Emery has clearly made progress in building a new team.

This applies, among others, to the two new attacking players, Nicolas Jackson and Johan Manzambi. Both players scored on the penultimate matchday in the Premier League and thus played a key role in the team’s first league win of the season. In last weekend’s dress rehearsal against Brentford, Jackson—with another goal—and Manzambi—with an assist—were also decisive factors in the 2-2 draw against the “Bees.”

Their improving form was also evident during the previous international break, when Manzambi scored for Switzerland and Jackson for Senegal. The resurgence of Villa’s offense is further underscored by the fact that the seven-time English champions—who last won the title in 1981—have scored all six of their Premier League goals this season within the past three league matches.

Fenerbahce – Statistics & Current Form

As mentioned at the beginning, Fenerbahce recently handed Eyüpspor an 0–8 defeat in the Süper Lig. Vedat Muriqi was particularly efficient. The Kosovar scored no less than half of Fenerbahce’s goals.

His strong form was also evident during the recent international break. For example, he scored the decisive winning goal for his home country in the match against Ireland.

With six goals in seven league games, he’s picking up right where he left off last season. Last season, Muriqi was still playing for Mallorca, and he scored no fewer than 23 goals for the island club!

Will Muriqi strike again?

Given his continued strong form, the betting odds for him to score again in the match between Aston Villa and Fenerbahçe are also attractive. In addition to Muriqi, the club from Kadıköy has signed another top striker in Mason Greenwood. The Brit previously played for Marseille and, like Muriqi, enjoyed considerable success at Mallorca. This is clearly evident from the fact that Greenwood scored a whopping 37 goals for Olympique over the past two seasons!

Given the strong offense of Coach İsmail Kartal’s team, the odds on both teams scoring and more than two goals combined are also worth considering for the match between Aston Villa and Fenerbahçe. Another factor in favor of this combined bet is the hosts’ recently resurgent offense, as mentioned earlier. At the same time, however, the home team’s defense has been shaky on a regular basis. Because of this combination, Villa’s last five competitive matches have all ended with goals scored by both teams and more than two goals total!

Fenerbahce thrives on the road in the Champions League

The visitors can also take heart from the fact that they performed consistently on the road during the Champions League qualifiers. They remained unbeaten in their three away matches and secured victories against both Sturm Graz and Lyon.

Aston Villa vs. Fenerbahçe Head-to-Head Record

Aston Villa and the team from Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium have already faced off once this year. The match took place last January in Istanbul and ended with a 1-0 victory for the Birmingham side thanks to a goal by Jadon Sancho.

In addition, the two clubs faced off in the UEFA Cup in 1977, and the British side won both of those matches without conceding a goal. For the upcoming Aston Villa vs. Fenerbahçe match, the odds are once again pointing toward a home win against the 19-time Turkish champions.

Aston Villa – Fenerbahçe Prediction

After a particularly successful last season, in which Villa celebrated winning the Europa League, the team’s performance has dipped in Birmingham due to numerous departures. Recently, however, the hosts have stabilized.

After failing to score in their first three Premier League matches, the home team has averaged two goals per game in their last three league matches. Furthermore, they got off to a successful start in the Champions League with a 3-2 win in Bruges, and the personnel disputes from the start of the season have since subsided.

In light of this, a bet on a home win for Aston Villa against the Turkish runners-up seems advisable for the match between Aston Villa and Fenerbahçe. This prediction is supported by the statistics: The Birmingham side has won all three previous matches against the “Sari Kanaryalar,” each time keeping a clean sheet to top it off.
