Will Schalke’s defense hold up in the top flight?

The Royal Blues are back in the top flight after a three-year absence, and we have a prediction ready for their season opener against Augsburg!

The visitors earned their return to the top tier of German soccer thanks to a rock-solid defense—no other team in the 2. Bundesliga conceded fewer goals last season.

On average, Schalke conceded less than one goal per game (0.91). Now, of course, the challenges facing Schalke’s defense in the Bundesliga are significantly greater, even though the opponent’s offense had room for improvement in front of their home fans last season.

Only six teams scored fewer home goals than Augsburg by the end of the season. Against this backdrop, a prediction of no more than one goal for the home team in the match between Augsburg and Schalke looks promising.

Augsburg vs. Schalke AI Prediction

The AI estimates the probability of a win for Baum’s team at 49.9 percent—higher than the odds of 2.22 offered by Betano (as of August 27, 2026, 9:32 a.m.), which translates to a 45 percent probability.

Augsburg – Statistics & Current Form

During the summer break, FCA signed a new forward, Rodrigo Ribeiro. Although the 21-year-old played only in Portugal’s second division for Sporting’s reserve team last season, his talent is undisputed.

This is evident from the fact that he plays for Portugal’s U21 national team, and his enormous potential was already on full display during his debut last weekend in the DFB Cup. In the match against second-division side Cottbus, Ribeiro saw just under a quarter of an hour of action, but that was enough for him to set up one of Augsburg’s two goals in the 2-0 road win.

Kade is finding the back of the net again

Anton Kade is also back in fine form for the team that finished ninth in the last Bundesliga season. Last season, the attacking midfielder tied with Gregoritsch and Rieder as the club’s top scorer with six goals.

It appears he’s off to another strong season.
He scored in the preseason match against Sassuolo and also found the back of the net in the season’s first competitive game—the aforementioned cup victory in Cottbus. Given this impressive early form, we also see value in the betting odds for another goal by Kade in the match between Augsburg and Schalke.

Augsburg lacks the ability to capitalize

Augsburg should, however, avoid falling behind at halftime: The FCA trailed at halftime five times last season, and Coach Manuel Baum’s team went on to lose every single one of those matches. Only Bremen (7) and Heidenheim (6) suffered more home losses of this kind.

Schalke – Statistics & Current Form

The Royal Blues will rely on their strong defense—as described—upon their return to the top flight. One positive in this regard is that they demonstrated this defensive strength on the road last season as well. Allowing an average of just one goal per game, Schalke was the best defensive team in the away standings.

Furthermore, it was evident that their defensive strength did not wane in the second halves of matches. In just under two-thirds of their away games last season (65 percent), the Royal Blues kept a clean sheet. This figure was identical to their record in the first halves.

However, since the offense was slightly less efficient after halftime, the second halves of away games were often low-scoring. Only 12 percent featured more than one goal. By comparison, the figure for the first halves was 47 percent.

Once again, no more than one goal after the break?

Given this difference, the odds on no more than one goal after halftime are also worth considering for the match between Augsburg and Schalke. The newly promoted team also recorded a 5-2 away win last Monday in their DFB-Pokal debut against the fourth-division side from Halle. However, the score sounds much better than it actually was. Coach Neuron Muslic’s team didn’t secure the victory until extra time.

Dzeko Makes History Multiple Times

The match could also be historic for Edin Dzeko: The Bosnian would be playing his first Bundesliga match in 15 years and 255 days (his last was on December 18, 2010, for Wolfsburg against Hoffenheim). This would be the second-longest gap between two matches by a player in the league’s history. Only Wolfgang Böhni had a longer gap between two matches (16 years, 245 days between December 1966 and August 1983).

In addition, on the day of the Bundesliga match against Augsburg, the veteran could become the fourth-oldest field player in Bundesliga history at 40 years and 166 days. Only Klaus Fichtel (43 years and 184 days), Claudio Pizarro (41 years and 268 days), and Mirko Votava (40 years and 225 days) were older when they played their last Bundesliga match.

On top of that, the 2. Bundesliga champions further bolstered their already strong defense last summer. They signed Robin Gosens, a highly experienced left fullback, on loan from Fiorentina in Serie A.

Augsburg – Schalke Head-to-Head Record

The teams from the Veltins-Arena and FCA last faced each other in the DFB Cup in 2024. In that match, Augsburg secured a clear 3-0 victory in front of their home crowd in the second round. Thanks to that win, the home team has been undefeated in their last three matches against Schalke (2-1-0).

Furthermore, Augsburg’s last seven home league matches against Schalke have all featured goals from both teams. In addition, the hosts have been waiting quite some time for their next home win against the ninth-place team in the Bundesliga’s “all-time standings.” Specifically, that last victory came more than eleven years ago, and since then they’ve recorded four draws and two losses.

Among all teams that Schalke has faced at least four times on the road in the German top flight, no other club has a lower loss rate than FCA (9 percent). Nevertheless, the odds for the upcoming match between Augsburg and Schalke are slightly in favor of a home win.  

Augsburg vs. Schalke Prediction

Augsburg coach Manuel Baum will be looking forward to the match with some trepidation. In his four Bundesliga games against Schalke 04, the coach has earned just one point. Against no other team he has faced at least twice in the top flight has he averaged as few points per game as against the Royal Blues (0.25).

His time at Schalke was also, as is well known, far from pleasant for him—he managed the team for ten games in 2020 and failed to secure a single victory (0-4-6). Although Schalke are now visiting as a newly promoted team, they have traditionally been a tough opponent for FCA. In eight of eleven Bundesliga home games, Augsburg scored no more than one goal against S04.

On top of that, the visitors can take heart from the fact that last season, with 31 goals conceded in the 2. Bundesliga, they boasted the best defense of any team across the three German professional leagues. Furthermore, since the Bundesliga’s founding in the 1963–64 season, Schalke has conceded fewer goals in a single league season (29) only once—during the 1990–91 season, also in the 2. Bundesliga.

We expect Schalke to play very defensively in their season opener as well. A draw on the road would be an absolutely acceptable result for the newcomer to start the season. With that in mind, betting on the hosts scoring no more than one goal in the match between Augsburg and Schalke is recommended.
