Will England Impress Again in Their Second Group Match?

Rarely has an English national soccer team made such a convincing start to a major tournament as it did last Wednesday against Croatia. At the very latest after their 4-2 victory over their supposedly biggest rival in Group L, there are plenty of reasons to back the “Three Lions” in the match between England and Ghana.

Even the prominent panel of experts at Wettbasis is certain that the English will build on the positive impressions from their first match and confidently defeat Ghana as well. World Champion Guido Buchwald, in particular, couldn’t stop raving about the team after their opening victory over Croatia.

Despite the “Three Lions” being clear favorites on paper, this tournament has already impressively demonstrated on multiple occasions that the underdogs are consistently capable of pulling off surprise upsets. Nevertheless, ahead of England’s match against Ghana, it’s primarily the betting odds on Kane, Bellingham, Rice, and company that offer added value.

However, it takes a bit of creativity to secure higher odds. For example, you could combine an English victory with the number of goals scored or consider handicaps.

England vs. Ghana AI Prediction

Although everything points to an English victory over Ghana, from an AI perspective, there’s another value bet for this matchup. According to the calculated probabilities, the AI estimates that the Black Stars have a 26.3% chance of earning at least one point. If we convert this into fair odds, it would be 3.80.

At Betano, for example, the double chance (X2) is even offered at an impressive 4.35, which means nothing other than that the value in the England vs. Ghana AI prediction lies in a draw or a Ghanaian victory.

England – Statistics & Current Form

The strong start has triggered a veritable wave of euphoria across the island. Interest in the team is enormous: The match against Croatia reached peak viewership of 15.4 million in the UK, making it the most-watched TV broadcast of the year. At the same time, ticket prices for upcoming England matches have skyrocketed, as many fans are suddenly dreaming of a deep run in the tournament once again. The longing for a second World Cup triumph since 1966 (!) is immense, as is the belief in a successful tournament run.

England is shaping up as a World Cup title contender

The 4-2 opening victory against a team that has regularly caused a stir at recent major tournaments was far more than just a win. The “Three Lions” displayed tremendous offensive quality for long stretches and, at the same time, showed mental toughness by not letting two Croatian equalizers rattle them. As mentioned earlier, Harry Kane scored twice, tying Gary Lineker’s English World Cup record with ten goals. It’s very possible that the Bayern star will once again open the scoring on Tuesday night.

Overall, there’s a positive atmosphere surrounding the world’s fourth-ranked team. This is due in no small part to the fact that the players, the federation, and the fans have developed great confidence in the German coach.
Thomas Tuchel has proven at various clubs that he can both manage star players and win titles. The 52-year-old Swabian has taken the bench 15 times so far for this proud soccer nation, winning twelve of those matches and suffering only one defeat. While he was often accused of employing a style of play that was too pragmatic, it seems things have finally “clicked” for him in that regard. Given their form from the Croatia game, the “Three Lions” are definitely a force to be reckoned with. Without a doubt.

Ghana – Statistics & Current Form

Ghana is perhaps the most underrated team in the group so far. Although their 1-0 opening victory over Panama didn’t come until Caleb Yirenkyi scored in the 95th minute, the Black Stars displayed exactly the qualities that make them dangerous: patience, discipline, and a dangerous transition game.

Their solid defensive work was also notable, even though their offense—despite prominent players like Semenyo and Ayew—struggled to click for long stretches. Compared to the friendly match defeats against Germany (1–2) and Austria (1–5)—which somewhat skew public perception in German-speaking countries anyway—the performance against a harmless opponent was still decent.

Ghana will park the bus in front of its own goal

The three points have opened the door wide to the knockout stage. Even two narrow losses to England and Croatia in the final matches could be enough to advance as one of the eight best third-place teams. In my opinion, it’s therefore very likely that the team led by coach Carlos Queiroz—who replaced former Bundesliga pro Otto Addo in a leadership role shortly before the tournament began—will once again adopt a very defensive approach.

If the “Black Stars” once again manage to defend compactly and put their speedy offensive players on the attack, they have the potential to at least shake up England’s status as favorites. However, I’m more inclined to believe that the favorite from the home of soccer is too strong and will set the course for victory early on. That’s exactly why, in the England vs. Ghana matchup, I’m predicting that Harry Kane and company will score at least once in each half. Alternatively, you can bet on an English victory with a maximum of four goals scored in the match. Betano is offering odds of 1.52 as the highest for this bet.

England – Ghana Head-to-Head Record

The two national teams played their only match against each other in March 2011 in a friendly. Ghana surprised everyone back then with a 1-1 draw on English soil.

Now, for the first time, they’ll face off head-to-head on the big World Cup stage. For England, this will be their seventh World Cup match against an African opponent. To date, their record stands at four wins and two draws.

England vs. Ghana Prediction

In my view, there’s hardly any way around England in this match. The opening win against Croatia showed the potential of Thomas Tuchel’s team, while Ghana, despite their 1-0 victory over Panama, was unable to make much of an impact offensively.

I therefore expect the Three Lions to control the game and showcase their individual talent over the full 90 minutes. However, given the Africans’ improved defense, I don’t expect a goal fest—at most, four goals in the match. That doesn’t change the fact that, between England and Ghana, I see the bet that Tuchel’s team will score in both halves as the most lucrative.
