Will Fenerbahçe Have to Sweat It Out Again?

The battle for the coveted and financially lucrative spots in Europe’s premier club competition is entering its decisive phase. In my Gornik Zabrze vs. Fenerbahçe tip, I’m focusing on an intriguing matchup. After a narrow 1-0 victory in the first leg, the Turkish runners-up head into the second leg in Poland with only a slim lead.

Thanks to a decent performance in the first leg, Lukas Podolski’s home club senses an opportunity in the second leg at Stadion Miejski. The Polish fans among the nearly 30,000 spectators are sure to be fired up by this historic chance to advance to the third qualifying round of the Champions League. And yet, the bookies’ predictions for Gornik Zabrze vs. Fenerbahce show that the Kanaryalar are the heavy favorites to advance in this match.

Unlike in the first leg, however, I expect the Poles to score at least one goal in the second leg in front of their home crowd. I also don’t expect last year’s runner-up in the Polish Ekstraklasa to keep a clean sheet against the heavy favorites from Turkey.

Gornik Zabrze – Fenerbahçe Head-to-Head Record

The Turks’ narrow 1-0 victory was the only international matchup between the two teams to date. In general, Fenerbahçe has faced only one other Polish team in European competition so far. Against Ruch Chorzów, the Yellow Canaries’ record is negative, with just one win and three losses. In addition to Fenerbahçe, Górnik Zabrze has also faced a team from Turkey only once before.

Against Göztepe, Lukas Podolski’s home club managed two wins. However, those two matches took place back in the 1970s, just like Fenerbahçe’s matches against Ruch Chorzów. The fact that these duels are far in the past and have little relevance to the present is evident from the Górnik Zabrze vs. Fenerbahçe betting odds, which clearly favor the visitors.

Last season marked the definitive end of former German national team player Lukas Podolski’s long career. But I expect the Yellow Canaries to struggle again in the second leg, conceding at least one goal. After all, last season Zabrze was the strongest home team in its domestic league and failed to score in only three matches. If the hosts score the first goal, the Miejski Stadium would also be on fire, which is unlikely to make the task any easier for Ismail Kartal’s team.

Despite a solid mid-season record last season, Domenico Tedesco failed to meet the high expectations of the club’s leadership on the Bosphorus and was fired midway through the season. His successor, Kartal, was provided with new signings worth approximately 80 million euros. The goal of the Turkish runner-up is clearly to reach the Champions League group stage—at the very least—not least because of the signings of international stars such as Mason Greenwood, Sidiki Chérif, and Nathan Aké.

First, however, the newly formed team from the Bosphorus must navigate the qualifying rounds, where they now face the daunting task of taking on the Polish runners-up, who are particularly strong at home. Since “Fener” cannot rest on its narrow first-leg victory, I expect the Turkish runners-up to look for success not solely through defense.
