Will Cologne take the decisive step toward avoiding relegation?

They can do it! After eight consecutive games without a win, 1. FC Köln finally celebrated three points again last weekend with a 3-1 home victory over Werder Bremen. A glance at the standings shows just how valuable the win against their direct rivals from the Weser was. Now in 13th place, the Rhinelanders have a five-point lead over 16th place, where FC St. Pauli currently sits.

If the Geißböcke are once again tipped to win when St. Pauli and Cologne face off on Friday evening to kick off Matchday 30 in the Bundesliga, this would likely be the decisive step toward securing their place in the league from the Cologne side’s perspective!

One factor pointing to a St. Pauli vs. Cologne prediction in favor of the Kiezkickers is the fact that Blessin’s squad has lost only two of their last eight Bundesliga home games—one of them last week against FC Bayern (0-5). Nevertheless, the form curve for the iconic club from the Reeperbahn has been trending in the wrong direction for several weeks now. Their last three points in the top flight date back to February 28, making it nearly two months ago.

All in all, there is naturally a lot at stake on Friday evening at the Millerntor. Excitement is virtually guaranteed, and it’s hard to pick a clear favorite. Given this, it’s no surprise that ahead of kickoff in the St. Pauli vs. Cologne match, the odds on the 1×2 market are all quite close together.

It may therefore make more sense to bet on a relatively high number of goals. St. Pauli must play for the win to somehow get closer to safety and put pressure on their rivals. Meanwhile, Cologne boasts an offense that is quite high-quality given their position in the table.

St. Pauli vs. Cologne AI Prediction

The last time 1. FC Cologne won an away game in the Bundesliga was on October 3, 2025. According to the AI, that will change this weekend. The Rhinelanders have the edge in both the calculated xG values (1.07 vs. 1.22) and the probability of winning (34.1% vs. 38.6%). The fair odds for a visiting win should actually be 2.60.

St. Pauli – Stats & Current Form

With 25 points from 29 games, FC St. Pauli is currently having the third-worst Bundesliga season in the club’s history. As expected back in the summer, the Kiezkickers will have to worry about staying in Germany’s top flight until the very end. On a positive note, however, coach Alexander Blessin’s team still holds its fate in its own hands. In particular, the direct showdowns against Cologne, Heidenheim, and VfL Wolfsburg at home on the final matchday offer glimmers of hope amid the recently darkening sporting skies over the Elbe.

St. Pauli sees good chances of a win at home!

The “Boys in Brown” have earned just two points in their last five Bundesliga matches. Their recently established home form—a six-game unbeaten streak (3-3-0)—also came to an abrupt end with two consecutive losses. Nevertheless, it’s worth noting that Hamburg has earned 16 of its 25 points at home so far. After all, 14 of the team’s total of just 25 goals scored have also come in home games.

Although Joel Chima Fujita—a key player who leads the team in tackles, dribbles, and shares the lead in assists—will be sidelined with a yellow card suspension for Friday night’s crucial home match, I believe it’s likely that the third-to-last team in the standings will at least find the back of the net. In 71 percent of all Pauli home games, the Over 2.5 would have come in. In over half of all league matches played at the Millerntor, both teams also scored.

Cologne – Statistics & Current Form

1. FC Köln has played two matches so far under Kwasniok’s successor, Rene Wagner, picking up four out of a possible six points. The emotional comeback draw at Eintracht Frankfurt—where they came back from a 0-2 deficit out of nowhere to tie 2-2—was followed last week by three crucial points at home against Werder Bremen.

Boosted by an early opening goal from Said El Mala and an equally early red card for Marco Friedl, the Cologne side were able to create some breathing room in the relegation battle with their 3-1 victory. The five-point cushion over 16th place looks relatively comfortable, although matches against Leverkusen and Bayern Munich still remain on the schedule for the final stretch.

Cologne boasts the best offense in the lower half of the table

An even more important realization over the last two matchdays, however, was that the joy of playing—and above all, the self-confidence—has returned to the Billy Goats. No other team recorded a higher xG total over the past two weekends than the Rhineland-based promoted side.

The top duo of El Mala and Ache, in particular, can make the difference. Ache has already scored six times in the second half of the season alone, while Said El Mala’s 11 goals this season are surpassed among all teenage players in Europe’s top five leagues only by a certain Lamine Yamal (15). I expect Wagner’s approach to remain bold and attacking on Friday night as well. In twelve of the past 14 Bundesliga matches involving Cologne, both teams scored. Over the entire season, Marvin Schwäbe has also kept a clean sheet only three times.

Also interesting: Only the clubs in the top four spots, as well as Eintracht Frankfurt, scored more goals after halftime than the Effzeh. 55 goals were scored in the second halves of Cologne’s (38 in the first half). The Kiezkickers have also scored the majority of their own goals after the break and conceded more goals.

St. Pauli – Cologne Head-to-Head Record

Since returning to the Bundesliga in 2024, FC St. Pauli has performed remarkably well against promoted teams. None of the five matches against newcomers from the 2. Bundesliga were lost (2-3-0). Six consecutive unbeaten matches of this kind would set a new club record. The only problem is that the “Boys in Brown” have been waiting for a win against 1. FC Köln for seven meetings now. During this period, they have recorded two draws and suffered five losses. The Kiezkickers’ last victory against their upcoming opponent came in 2011. The first leg in Cologne ended in a 1-1 draw.

St. Pauli – Cologne Prediction

Five points currently separate St. Pauli and Cologne in the standings. The Hamburg side sits in 16th place, while Cologne is in 13th. It is also the Rhinelanders who have delivered better results recently.

Four points from their last two games is twice as many as St. Pauli have earned from their past five Bundesliga matches (0-2-3). The standings and the fact that the home team has lost only two of their last eight Bundesliga home games still make for a tense and highly charged match.

However, anyone expecting a low-scoring affair might find themselves mistaken. Cologne boasts the best offense in the bottom half of the table, yet they have also kept a clean sheet only three times this season. Twelve of the last 14 league games involving the Effzeh have seen both teams score. That’s exactly what my St. Pauli vs. Cologne tip for Friday night is targeting. Currently, odds of 1.80 are being offered for “Both Teams to Score.” My fictional stake is five units. Alternatively, I see value in betting on the away win or on more goals after halftime!
