Will the top favorite stumble right off the bat?

There are favorites, and then there’s VfL Wolfsburg as the clear frontrunner in this 2. Bundesliga season. The “Wolves” are far ahead of the competition both financially and in terms of quality, having invested more money in new players this summer than all other 2. Bundesliga clubs combined. Anything less than immediate promotion back to the top flight would therefore not only be a disappointment but would amount to a sporting failure. Expectations and pressure are correspondingly high ahead of the home opener against 1. FC Kaiserslautern, which is set to serve as the first real test. In my view, there’s virtually no alternative to predicting a successful season opener for the Lower Saxony side in the match between Wolfsburg and Kaiserslautern, even if the first matchday traditionally follows its own rules.

A look at the roster makes it clear why VfL is considered the benchmark in the 2. Bundesliga. With players such as Robert Glatzel, Hauke Wahl, and above all Fabian Reese, the Lower Saxony club has signed several top-tier players, though of course the former Berlin player’s move in particular made headlines across Germany. As part of my Wolfsburg vs. Kaiserslautern prediction, by the way, I can definitely see myself betting on Fabian Reese to score.

Their preseason, on the other hand, went quite well and ended with a 3-1 win over FC Metz, which at least provides some confidence. In addition, FCK already seems a bit more cohesive compared to many of its rivals, even though Luca Sirch—a crucial pillar of the team—has left the club to join Elversberg. The last-minute suspension of fullback Holy is also a blow.

The former German champions’ away record also remains a concern: Last season, they managed just five wins on the road, and the “Red Devils” scored only 17 goals away from home. In my view, these very numbers suggest that the odds for a commanding home victory look particularly attractive ahead of the Wolfsburg vs. Kaiserslautern matchup.

Wolfsburg – Kaiserslautern Head-to-Head Record

The head-to-head record is of very limited significance ahead of the second-division opener. This is the first time since 2012 that VfL Wolfsburg and 1. FC Kaiserslautern have faced each other in a competitive match; back then, they were still in the Bundesliga. In fact, at first glance, the historical record even slightly favors the team from the Palatinate, as the Lower Saxony side has won only one of the past seven head-to-head matches. In contrast, FCK has two wins and three draws. However, the circumstances have changed fundamentally since then. Accordingly, the head-to-head record is unlikely to have much impact on the Wolfsburg vs. Kaiserslautern betting odds for the season opener.

Wolfsburg – Kaiserslautern Prediction

VfL Wolfsburg is simply no ordinary second-division team this season. The Lower Saxony-based club has resources that most of its competitors can only dream of and is entering the season with a clear mission: to secure immediate promotion back to the top flight. Of course, the question remains at the start of the season whether, following the major roster shakeup, all the pieces will already be meshing perfectly.

However, the preseason went well, and coach Tobias Strobl advocates a bold, attack-oriented style of soccer designed to showcase his team’s quality advantage to the fullest. I share this conviction and have therefore decided to bet on the handicap (-1.5) in favor of VfL in the match between Wolfsburg and Kaiserslautern. In my view, the 2.55 odds at Bet-at-home offer a strong balance between risk and potential return, especially since I’m absolutely confident the hosts can win by a margin of at least two goals.
