Will the French newcomer’s run come to an end?

While Alexander Zverev, after receiving a bye in the first round, struggled notably against Argentine clay-court specialist Mariano Navone and suffered a significant slump in the second set that led to him losing the set, Terence Atmane remained undefeated in two matches and without dropping a set in his Madrid debut. The left-hander, who most recently even eliminated a seeded player, his compatriot Ugo Humbert, 2-0, is thus one of the surprises of the tournament.

This makes it all the more intriguing to wonder whether a bet on the world No. 47 to win against Alexander Zverev is now conceivable, especially since the northern Frenchman, born near the Opal Coast, also won his only match to date against a top-10 player in 2026 (2-1 against Félix Auger-Aliassime in Miami).

It is clear that Terence Atmane can cause problems for the Madrid specialist, who has already won the tournament twice in 2018 and 2021 and also reached the final in 2022. The Frenchman, who claims to have an IQ of 158, is left-handed and will therefore test Sascha differently on the fast Madrid clay, as his slice and topspin in particular usually land naturally on the German’s forehand—whose best shot is known to be his backhand.

If the Hamburg native then goes through another slump, the supposed underdog definitely has a shot at winning a set. Consequently, we see a lot of value in the bet that the match will go the full distance of three sets.

And yet, we must not overlook the fact that the 22-year-old Frenchman is entering uncharted territory. He has only participated in Madrid once before, in 2024, and was eliminated in the first round of qualifying. While his win rate of 37.5 percent against top-10 players looks very promising, his season record of nine wins and nine losses is absolutely unremarkable. So even if he takes a set from Sascha, the most likely outcome in the end is still a 2-1 victory for the German, which is therefore also a viable betting option.

Terence Atmane – Alexander Zverev Prediction

On paper, the world No. 3 from Germany is, of course, the clear favorite. However, there are certainly a few factors that could tip the match in favor of the young Frenchman at times—he has yet to drop a set in his two matches at La Caja Mágica so far, and as a left-hander, he’s difficult to play against. Especially since Sascha hasn’t faced him yet, and the northern Frenchman could very well get into a groove with his highly unorthodox and at times hyper-aggressive style of play.

We can reasonably imagine that, following his three-set victory over Mariano Navone, Sascha will also have to go the full distance of three sets in the third round of the 2026 Madrid Masters.
