Will the Red Devils celebrate the expected blowout victory?

The Red Devils are back in the Champions League! After two years, England’s record champion returns to the biggest stage in European soccer. However, Michael Carrick’s team isn’t among the absolute top favorites in this season’s Champions League. This is in contrast to my Manchester United vs. Sabah Baku prediction, where the English side is the clear favorite.

After all, the Red Devils’ Champions League opener could have gone much worse. For one thing, the English side has a home game; for another, they’re hosting the Azerbaijani champions—one of the supposedly weakest teams in this Champions League season. In any case, I didn’t find many arguments in my Manchester United vs. Sabah Baku prediction that the visitors could pull off an upset at Old Trafford.

Manchester United vs. Sabah Baku AI Prediction

Our AI’s Manchester United vs. Sabah Baku prediction would set the odds of a win for the English side higher than the bookies’ odds. Although the AI estimates the visitors’ chances of winning at only 5%, there is actually value in the underdog odds. That’s because, according to current Betano odds, the visitors’ chance of winning is only 4.2%.

For those who find that too risky, the Manchester United vs. Sabah Baku AI prediction reveals that, according to artificial intelligence, there’s also value in betting on fewer than four goals being scored in the match.

Manchester United – Stats & Current Form

Since the club’s successful decade a few decades ago, Man United has been unable to replicate the great successes of days gone by. Following Sir Alex Ferguson’s impressive 27-year tenure, a total of twelve different managers have taken the helm as head coach of the Red Devils since 2013—with limited success. In January of this year, former player Michael Carrick took over and led the team to third place in the Premier League during the second half of the season, securing a spot in the Champions League.

Will Manchester live up to its status as the favorite in the Champions League opener?

There, Carrick’s squad will face one of the biggest underdogs in the group stage. Since the team has steadily improved under Michael Carrick and the former midfielder has the best points average of any United manager since Alex Ferguson, I don’t see much of a chance for the underdog in the upcoming match.

I also expect a few goals from the Red Devils’ brilliantly talented offense against the clear underdog from Azerbaijan. After their surprising opening-day loss to newly promoted Hull City, Man United has recently shown a clear upward trend in the domestic Premier League.

Against Ipswich Town and Everton, Carrick’s team subsequently picked up four points and remained undefeated. So Manchester United seems ready for a commanding start to the Champions League, which I believe the Red Devils are capable of against this clear underdog.

Sabah Baku – Stats & Current Form

Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich—as always, the biggest names in European soccer are once again represented in the Champions League this season. In this shark tank of European soccer’s elite, Sabah Baku is an underdog this year that most European soccer fans are likely unfamiliar with. So who exactly is this unknown team from Azerbaijan, and what can we expect from them in the Champions League?

How well will Sabah Baku fare at Old Trafford?

Last season, the team led by Lithuanian Valdas Dambrauskas won the Azerbaijani league title for the first time, finishing ahead of Qarabag Agdam—the team that made quite an impression in the Champions League group stage the previous season. In addition, Sabah FK has won the national cup in each of the past two years.

The club was founded in 2017 and was promoted to Azerbaijan’s top division just one year later. The team made its European debut in the 2013–14 season, when Dambrauskas’s squad was eliminated in the Conference League qualifiers. The same pattern repeated in subsequent seasons, with the team consistently being knocked out in the Conference League or Europa League qualifiers.

This season, however, they pulled off a major upset. In four rounds of Champions League qualifying, they eliminated teams including Aarhus and Hapoel Be’er Sheva. As a result, the Azerbaijani champions can look forward to a windfall of millions in the Champions League group stage.

Manchester United – Sabah Baku Head-to-Head Record

Never before in their long club history have the Red Devils faced an opponent from Azerbaijan in a competitive match. Conversely, Sabah FK has no experience facing English teams on the international stage. The upcoming matchup between the two teams is therefore a true first in two respects. Despite the lack of a head-to-head record, it comes as no surprise that the betting odds for Manchester United vs. Sabah Baku clearly favor the favorite in this David vs. Goliath matchup.

Manchester United – Sabah Baku Prediction

Last weekend, Man United conceded an equalizer against Everton deep into stoppage time. Michael Carrick’s team continues to show defensive vulnerabilities this season and has conceded two goals in every competitive match so far. Sabah Baku, on the other hand, celebrated a comfortable 5-0 home win against Zira in their domestic league.

Given the home team’s defensive shortcomings, I do believe the visitors are capable of scoring a goal in this Champions League opener. Ultimately, however, there’s a world of difference between the two teams, as the comparison of their squad values clearly shows. Man United’s squad is valued at nearly one billion euros, while Sabah Baku’s squad is worth just under 20 million euros. Anything other than a clear victory for the hosts would therefore be a massive surprise.

I see two possible scenarios in my Manchester United vs. Sabah FK prediction, both of which should result in several goals. Either the underdog will keep up well—as long as they have the stamina—and may even score a goal against the Red Devils’ still-vulnerable defense before the favorite strikes back decisively. Or United will dominate the match from the start and, with a comfortable lead, become a bit complacent, allowing the visitors to create scoring opportunities of their own.

In either case, a bet on both teams to score could pay off, and I see value in that for this matchup. Like the bookies, I consider the likelihood of more than three goals in this game to be high. Even if the underdog doesn’t score at Old Trafford, Manchester is strong enough to score several goals in front of its home crowd and break the 3.5-goal barrier with its own goals alone.
