A meaningless match
In the final stretch of a season, there are always matches that have to be played even though there is nothing left at stake for either team. Such a scenario will play out on Thursday evening in the Royals’ home game against Real Oviedo.
After a learning year, the visitors must immediately return to the second division, while the Madrid side, following their deserved defeat in Sunday’s “El Clásico,” no longer have a chance to displace FC Barcelona from the top. These circumstances naturally make it difficult to offer a profitable bet on the inconsequential Real Madrid vs. Real Oviedo match.
Just as it does, by the way, the fact that bookmakers with German licenses are offering vanishingly low odds on Real Madrid vs. Real Oviedo for the star-studded squad from the capital. The maximum odds on the disappointing Madrid side stand at 1.27 and are therefore not really worth betting on.
At the same time, however, I’m also far from placing a bet on the underdog. Over the entire season, the team that was promoted and then relegated has won just six matches. No other team has scored fewer goals than the Carbayones (26), who, with a total of 29 points, have had no chance of avoiding relegation for several weeks now.
So my inclination leans more toward the Galacticos again, though they’re currently grappling with numerous sources of unrest. Chief among them is the training ground brawl involving two starters, Valverde and Tchouamenie, who have been sidelined ever since. The same goes, by the way, for Kylian Mbappé, who was already missing against Barcelona.
Actually, the offense still has enough quality to pose significant problems for an inferior opponent. Add to that the home-field advantage and the associated desire to show their own fans a different, better side. Statistics or numbers, meanwhile, don’t play a major role—the significance of this match is simply too limited for that.
Real Madrid – Oviedo Head-to-Head Record
Real Oviedo last won a competitive match against Real Madrid nearly 30 years ago. Back in 1998, they celebrated a narrow 1-0 home victory in La Liga. You have to go back another three years on the timeline to find their last away win at the Bernabéu.
To give the underdog some credit, however, it should be noted that Real Oviedo spent over 20 years stuck in the lower divisions before making a comeback with their promotion in 2024/25. The first leg of the current season ended 3-0 in favor of Los Blancos, who struggled until the closing stages and only secured the final score with two late goals.

Real Madrid – Oviedo Prediction
After losing the “Clásico,” virtually everything in Madrid revolves around the question of who will be on the bench next season. Spanish media, for example, report that a basic agreement has been reached with Jose Mourinho.
Other newspapers dismiss this as pure fiction and assume that Arbeloa’s successor will be decided rather late. The fact is that the Royals currently have far more pressing issues than the completely inconsequential home game against Real Oviedo, who are already relegated and sit at the bottom of the table.
Regardless, the Madrid side will certainly want to show a different side of themselves than they did over the weekend. With the fans behind them and given the significant difference in quality between Real Madrid and Real Oviedo, I’m therefore betting on a home win, with no more than four goals scored in the match. I found the best odds at 1.75 on Betano, which I’m betting five units on.
