Will it be another nail-biter in Limassol?
After a 2-0 victory in the first leg, Hajduk Split heads to the Alphamega Stadium in Limassol for the second leg in an excellent position. However, the result was more decisive than the course of the game would suggest, as Pafos FC held their own for long stretches but struggled in the final third due to a lack of precision and clinical finishing in attack.
Playing in front of their home crowd, the fourth-place finisher from the most recent Cypriot league season will now have to adopt a much more offensive approach to turn the tie around. My Pafos vs. Hajduk Split prediction is therefore not based solely on the first-leg result, but also takes into account the expected dynamics of a second leg in which the hosts will look to push forward early on.
Anyone who focuses solely on the 0-2 result from the first leg may be slightly underestimating Pafos FC. However, the Cypriots have proven time and again—especially during the last Champions League group stage—that they can hold their own even against top-tier opponents. In particular, the 1-0 win over Villarreal, the 2-2 draw against AS Monaco, and the scoreless draw at Olympiacos Piraeus impressively underscored the potential this team possesses.
However, that very sense of confidence seems to have been somewhat lost following the departure of successful coach Juan Carlos Carcedo this past winter. Their fourth-place finish in the domestic league speaks for itself, even though the squad remains one of the strongest in Cyprus in terms of quality. Nevertheless, I’m not averse to predicting a home win for Pafos in the match against Hajduk Split. After all, their performance in the first leg showed that the Cypriots were by no means outclassed. Added to that is the home-field advantage, which plays a very important role in this matchup.
On the one hand, the Cypriots still have a roster that, in terms of quality, is at least on par with that of Hajduk Split. On the other hand, the Croatians have shown problems in their only away game so far this still-fresh European Cup season, having already lost 1–2 to MSK Žilina in the first qualifying round.
Apart from that, the psychological factor should not be underestimated: With a 2–0 lead behind them, Hajduk suddenly has much more to lose than it did before the first leg. Pafos, on the other hand, knows exactly where they stand. They need a win (preferably by a wide margin), which is why the hosts can come out boldly from the start with a clear offensive drive. This pressure can certainly have a liberating effect, while Hajduk must first find the balance between protecting their lead and playing their own attacking game.
That’s exactly why I consider a home win for the Cypriots to be the most likely 1X2 scenario, even if it doesn’t automatically guarantee advancement to the next qualifying round. I’ve therefore decided to bet on a home win for Pafos after 90 minutes in the match between Pafos and Hajduk Split.
Pafos – Hajduk Split Head-to-Head Record
The first leg was much closer than the 2-0 score suggests. Pafos actually had more possession, more shots on goal, and more shots on target, but failed to capitalize on their chances, while Hajduk struck coldly within eight minutes of the break and sealed the final score with a quick-fire double.
Incidentally, for the Cypriots—who are currently led by Portuguese head coach Ricardo Sa Pinto—this was their first-ever European cup match against a Croatian club. Despite trailing by two goals, the door to the third qualifying round of the Europa League remains open for Pafos, as the hosts of the second leg a week ago were by no means the inferior team in terms of play.
Pafos – Hajduk Split Prediction
Despite the 0–2 loss in the first leg, nothing is decided yet ahead of the second leg. While Hajduk Split secured an excellent starting position in front of their home crowd, the match was much more evenly contested than the score suggests. Pafos held their own very well for long stretches, even enjoying an edge in possession and shots on goal, but failed to capitalize on their chances.
It’s also worth noting that the Croatians have already lost 1–2 on the road to MSK Žilina in this qualifying round. The psychological factor should not be underestimated either: While Pafos must play boldly on the attack from the start and has little to lose, Hajduk needs to hold onto its lead until the final whistle—a situation that is by no means easy for every team.
I’m therefore going with the Pafos vs. Hajduk Split pick for a home win by the Cypriots. I’m betting five units at attractive odds of 1.87. Pafos already showed in the first leg that they can play on absolutely equal footing, and they’re likely to take more and more risks as the game goes on. That’s exactly why I also think betting on more goals in the second half is an exciting alternative.
