Will the Black Forest team make history on the Bosphorus?

SC Freiburg has become the 16th German club ever to reach a European final. The Breisgau-based side is the first debutant in a major final since FC Schalke 04 in 1996/97. However, the Black Forest team now faces an overwhelming opponent. No team has won more competitive matches in UEFA competitions since the start of the 2023/24 season than the Lions (26), and only Arsenal FC has kept more clean sheets (19) than the Villans (16) during that same period. Nevertheless, in the Freiburg vs. Aston Villa matchup, betting on the Premier League side to lift the trophy in Istanbul is no sure thing.

Admittedly, the English side has Unai Emery—virtually “Mr. Europa League” himself—on the sidelines, a man who has already won the title in this competition four times with Sevilla and Villarreal. For the Birmingham club, however, this is their first European final since 1982, when they were defeated 1-0 by Bayern Munich in the European Cup final. The Lions are therefore unlikely to approach the match with excessive composure, and any nervousness on their part could be punished by a courageous Freiburg side. Accordingly, the prediction for Freiburg vs. Aston Villa is particularly intriguing: that both teams will score during regular time.

Given that the odds from top bookmakers are so lopsided in the run-up to the final between Freiburg and Aston Villa—and clearly stacked against the SC Freiburg—the so-called underdog bet actually offers plenty of value. The BETSiE supercomputer calculates a 20.5 percent chance for the Black Forest side to win this final in regulation time. Opta data from Stats Perform even puts SCF’s chance of victory at 21.9 percent.

Those who aren’t afraid to take a risk can therefore bet on the Breisgauers pulling off a major upset in the bet365 app at odds of 5.50, as these odds translate to a probability of 18.2 percent—a figure significantly undercut by both the AI and the Opta data, meaning this bet carries a positive expected value.

Freiburg – Stats & Current Form

SC Freiburg already sent a clear signal to Birmingham on Saturday. Champions League participant RB Leipzig was crushed 4-1, meaning the Black Forest side has at least secured a spot in the 2026/27 Conference League. Of course, Julian Schuster’s squad now wants even more: On the Bosporus, the debutants aim to win their first-ever international final in club history and thereby qualify for the Champions League for the first time ever.

The Breisgau side has had a strong season in the Europa League. The Black Forest team won eleven consecutive home games in this competition, matching the record set by record-breaking champions Sevilla. Furthermore, they even pulled off a comeback in the semifinals against Sporting Braga after losing the first leg 1-2 in northern Portugal (3-1 home win in the second leg).

Freiburg brings a keen goal-scoring instinct

The Baden-Württemberg side was particularly impressive across the board on the offensive end. The Sport-Club scored an impressive 25 goals on their way to the final, and their efficiency was also on point. Their expected goals (xG) total was just 21.8, and they consequently exceeded that by +3.2. Accordingly, the prediction for Freiburg vs. Aston Villa is that the Breisgau side won’t go scoreless in the big final of all matches, especially since Julian Schuster’s team needed practically no warm-up and scored 60 percent of all their goals in the first half (15 out of 25).

Also worth highlighting, however, is the defensive compactness with which SCF can also unnerve the Lions. The Breisgauers conceded just ten goals in the Europa League, even though their opponents’ chances amounted to an expected goals value of 17.3 percent.

Aston Villa – Statistics & Current Form

Aston Villa Football Club is back in a European final for the first time since 1982. Only Manchester City has waited longer in history to qualify for a UEFA competition final again (from 1970 to 2021). Now, of course, the Villans are aiming to win their second international title, a goal bolstered above all by their manager’s experience. Unai Emery has won the Europa League a total of four times with Sevilla and Villarreal. Ironically, however, he has previously lost a Europa League final with an English club (Arsenal in 2019).

Nevertheless, the odds for the Freiburg vs. Aston Villa match clearly favor the Lions, who have racked up an impressive 26 wins in UEFA competitions since the start of the 2023/24 season—more than any other club in Europe. On top of that, thanks to their successful dress rehearsal—a 4-2 rout of Liverpool FC last Friday—qualification for the Champions League is already in the bag.

Aston Villa doesn’t give up too many goals defensively

Above all, the Birmingham club’s defensive compactness speaks in its favor. Since the start of the 2023/24 season, only Arsenal FC has kept more clean sheets in European competitive matches (19) than Aston Villa (16). However, with Amadou Onana (calf issues) and Boubacar Kamara (knee injury) out, the team is missing two key ball-winners in front of the back line who played a major role in that defensive stability.

Offensively, however, the Villans are also one of the most dangerous teams in Europe. The Lions scored an impressive 28 goals on their way to the final, exceeding their expected goals total even more significantly than SC Freiburg (22.8 – +5.2). This is also due to the fact that Aston Villa has the highest shooting accuracy in the competition (45.2 percent) and a strong conversion rate of 16.7 percent (Freiburg: 13.1 percent).

Freiburg – Aston Villa Head-to-Head Record

Head-to-Head: 0 – 0 – 0

The two clubs have never faced each other in an international competitive match before. Consequently, there is no “head-to-head” data available that could influence our prediction for Freiburg vs. Aston Villa in any way.

Freiburg – Aston Villa Prediction

Although eight of the last ten German-English finals in UEFA competitions have gone to the Premier League representative, SC Freiburg still has a real chance to make history in many ways and secure qualification for the UEFA Champions League in addition to the first major title in the club’s history. This can be achieved if the Black Forest side puts in another courageous performance. The Breisgauers scored 15 of their 25 Europa League goals in the first half, making it a thoroughly interesting side bet to wager that SC Freiburg will score the first goal in this final, regardless of the outcome.

Although the assessments by AI and Stats Perform have shown that the bet on the Bundesliga side to win also comes with a positive expected value. In our opinion, however, the most logical bet is that the Lions—who have typically stepped up their game significantly in the second half—will also find the back of the net. Accordingly, the bet on both teams to score offers us significant value.
