Will the ‘Tigers’ get promoted?
The “richest game in football” beckons! We’re talking, of course, about the Championship Playoff Final, whose winner will be promoted to the Premier League and, in one fell swoop, add more than £100 million in TV and advertising revenue to the club’s coffers.
The fact that “Boro” is in the final wasn’t decided on the field, but only this week following the two semifinal matches against Southampton, due to the “Saints” being disqualified by the EFL!
Southampton initially booked their spot in the final thanks to a victory over Middlesbrough in the second leg, but due to allegations of “spying” surrounding the semifinal, the team led by German coach Tonda Eckert was subsequently disqualified. Specifically, an analyst from the club at St. Mary’s Stadium is alleged to have secretly filmed a training session of the “Teessiders” ahead of the second leg, among other things.
As a result of the association’s decision, fifth-place Hull and sixth-place Middlesbrough—both from the regular season—will now face off in a completely unexpected matchup. However, we slightly favor the “Tigers” due to their solid performances in the previous semifinal, and for the match between Hull and Southampton, we predict a draw or a victory for Coach Sergej Jakirović’s team in regulation time.
Another factor in favor of this is that Hull had more time to prepare, as their opponent could only be certain of making the final at all as of Wednesday evening, after Southampton’s appeal was rejected. Additionally, we expect a severe lack of goals.
Due to the enormous significance of the final for promotion to the English top flight, these matches are typically characterized by defensive play. This is clearly evident in the fact that only two of the past 13 finals have featured more than two goals in regulation time!
Hull – Middlesbrough Head-to-Head Record
The 2014 FA Cup finalist and Middlesbrough last faced each other in December of last year, with the “Tigers” securing a 1-0 away win. This ended a previous winless streak of four games for Hull against “Boro” (0-1-3).
For the upcoming match between Hull and Middlesbrough, however, the odds are once again pointing toward a victory for the team from the northeast of the country.
Hull – Middlesbrough Prediction
Hull has successfully navigated the playoffs twice before (2008 and 2016). Now, however, they head into the final as underdogs against Coach Kim Hellberg’s team at Riverside Stadium.
We do not share the bookmakers’ assessment. In our view, the four-time second-division champions are clearly weakened in terms of personnel. For instance, Tommy Conway, their most important striker, is out due to an ankle injury sustained in the semifinal against Southampton.
The Scot, who will also be unable to play for the “Brave Hearts” at the 2026 World Cup due to the injury, scored 13 goals this season, matching his tally from the previous season. On top of that, Hull impressed defensively in their previous semifinal.
Their opponent Millwall failed to score a single goal in 180 minutes! Given this situation, we’re betting on the men from MKM Stadium to avoid defeat in regulation time in what is sure to be a very close match between Hull and Middlesbrough.
