Despite the late equalizer: Will FCU’s slump continue?
Thanks to a late goal by Burcu, 1. FC Union Berlin literally salvaged a 2-2 draw against 1. FC Köln last weekend. With that draw, the Ironers have now gone six games without a Bundesliga win (two draws, four losses). In the end, however, it was that single point that, with two matchdays remaining, secured another year in the Bundesliga. Mathematically, the Iron Men can no longer fall below 15th place—even if Mainz’s match against Union Berlin results in another loss for the capital city side.
That must have pleased Urs Fischer as well, who would surely have been reluctant to plunge his former employer—with whom he once celebrated a miraculous run into the Champions League—into fresh relegation worries. In doing so, Mainz recently shook off a mini-slump of four consecutive competitive matches without a win (one draw, three losses) with a 2-1 away victory at FC St. Pauli, thereby indirectly lending a helping hand to Union Berlin.
However, we don’t expect any more gifts, as our prediction for Mainz vs. Union Berlin points to a home win for Mainz, who have recently shown strong form at home despite losing two consecutive Bundesliga home games.
Meanwhile, Berlin’s interim solution, Marie-Louise Eta, has still not managed to secure a win (one draw, two losses). Officially, she is now the first person to hold the head coaching position at the Köpenick-based club to remain winless in her first three Bundesliga matches at FCU. However, anyone who wouldn’t categorically rule out that historic win for the 34-year-old could certainly bet on under 2.5 goals in the match with good value, even from a neutral perspective. After all, neither team is exactly known for goal-fests and both rely heavily on set pieces for their offense.
Mainz vs. Union Berlin AI Prediction
Occasionally, human judgment and machine algorithms come into direct conflict. That is exactly the case in this matchup. While we consider a home win for Mainz to be the most promising bet, the AI prediction for Mainz vs. Union Berlin points to an away win for the Köpenick side.
Mainz – Statistics & Current Form
For 1. FSV Mainz 05, relegation looked likely for a long time before the management made some adjustments on the bench and struck gold with Urs Fischer, who, incidentally, still boasts the best points-per-game average of any Union coach in the Bundesliga (1.47). The Swiss coach has brought lasting stability to the Rheinhessen side and boasts an even more impressive points average (1.63) with the only Bundesliga club from Rhineland-Palatinate.
Furthermore, the team even reached the Conference League quarterfinals, where—had they had a slightly better night than in the second leg in Strasbourg—they could very well have advanced another round. Although there will be no European soccer in Mainz in 2026/27, the assessment of the season must already be fundamentally positive.
Effective set pieces, but problems in build-up play
Nevertheless, the FSV has recently lost some of its home form. They suffered two consecutive defeats in front of their home crowd—twice as many home losses as in the previous ten Bundesliga home games (four wins, five draws, one loss). However, we wouldn’t rule out a Mainz win against Union Berlin. After all, the “Zero-Fivers” not only impress with a physical and intense style of play but are also consistently capable of scoring from set pieces.
A whopping 44 percent of all Mainz goals in 2025/26 came from set pieces, a figure actually surpassed only by today’s visitors from the capital (49 percent) and FC St. Pauli (52 percent). There is room for improvement, however, in the precision of their build-up play, though this is only an indirect disadvantage—at least in this home game. After all, Mainz’s poor pass completion rate of 75 percent is surpassed league-wide only by 1. FC Union Berlin (72 percent)…

Union Berlin – Statistics & Current Form
The fact that 1. FC Union Berlin’s free fall—currently at six consecutive league games without a win (two draws, four losses)—has now been halted by their early survival in the league was due, on the one hand, to Burcu’s last-minute equalizer against Cologne, but on the other hand to the snail’s-pace race between the three bottom-of-the-table teams Wolfsburg, St. Pauli, and Heidenheim—who, with 26 and 23 points respectively, now have no chance of overtaking the Köpenickers, even though the latter have managed just 33 points from 32 league games.
In particular, the Iron’s second half of the season is highly concerning. Only VfL Wolfsburg (ten) has fewer points from the second half of the season, while the Berliners, along with Heidenheim, also have the joint-worst defense of the second half, having conceded 31 goals.
Union Berlin is Mainz’s biggest bogey team
A clear change of direction was not evident under Marie-Louise Eta either, although at least one factor now clearly favors the Köpenickers: the head-to-head record. In 13 Bundesliga matches against FSV, FCU has suffered only a single defeat (seven wins, five draws). Against this backdrop, the odds of 4.40 offered by Betano for a Union Berlin win—which, according to the AI forecast, promise significant value—are once again a bit more appealing.
And yet:
No other Bundesliga team has such clear problems with possession play, plays even more imprecise passes, or is as dependent on set pieces as the capital club, which, with ten losses in its 16 Bundesliga away games of the 2025/26 season, will have to really stretch itself to prevent the looming away defeat at the Mewa Arena.

Mainz – Union Berlin Head-to-Head Record
Head to Head: 5 – 6 – 8
A total of 19 competitive matches have taken place between the two teams so far, and with eight wins, 1. FC Union Berlin leads the head-to-head record. Recently, the balance of power has shifted in favor of the Köpenick side, who have gone nine Bundesliga matches without a loss against 1. FSV Mainz 05 (five wins, four draws). Against no other club in the Bundesliga do the “Nullfünfer” have a lower points average than against the “Eisernen” (just 0.62 points per game).
Mainz – Union Berlin Tip
The fact that the betting odds from German-licensed bookmakers for Mainz vs. Union Berlin are so clearly in favor of the home team is no reason for us to avoid placing this bet. On the contrary: We agree that Mainz are the favorites. Although they have lost two home games in a row, prior to that they suffered only a single defeat in ten consecutive Bundesliga home games (four wins, four draws), demonstrating strong home form, even though their overall assessment remains somewhat clouded by their disastrous first half of the season.
However, it is not so much Mainz’s disastrous start against Union Berlin that is decisive for our prediction, but rather the current form of both teams. And while the FSV, under former FCU coach Urs Fischer, has a points average of 1.63, the Köpenick side has gone six league games in a row without a win (two draws, four losses)—a streak that even the high-profile coaching change to Marie-Louise Eta, which took place amid intense media interest, has been unable to reverse.
