It doesn’t get any more like a final than this!
Forget the FA Cup Final! Forget the thrilling three-way battle for promotion to the Bundesliga! Forget the nail-biting finale in the 3. Liga! The ultimate showdown to stay in Germany’s top flight takes place on Saturday afternoon at the Millerntor! It’s a direct clash between FC St. Pauli and VfL Wolfsburg.
The winner will likely earn two relegation playoff matches. Why “likely”? Because 1. FC Heidenheim has positioned itself as a third club and could even climb to 16th place. The fact is that the loser will be in the second division in 2026/27. If the prediction of a draw in the St. Pauli vs. Wolfsburg match comes true, it could—provided Heidenheim beats Mainz—even affect both teams…
The fact that the Kiezkickers are now considered to have even the slimmest chance of avoiding relegation is inevitably linked to the disappointing results of recent weeks. No other team in the Bundesliga has gone longer without a win than coach Alexander Blessin’s squad, which has also left the field as the loser three times in a row and is therefore not exactly brimming with confidence.
Nevertheless, all statistics lose their significance on the final matchday. Mental fortitude will be the deciding factor. That is precisely why I see real value in backing Hamburg over Wolfsburg in this matchup.
After all, the “Boys in Brown” can rely on home-field advantage, which has often been the deciding factor in major finals. That said, the visitors from Lower Saxony shouldn’t be written off just yet. Despite the slight upward trend under Dieter Hecking, the Wolves are rightly so far down in the standings.
For an ambitious club like the Autoklub, relegation to the 2nd Division would have even more far-reaching consequences. Consequently, there is likely even more pressure on the star-studded squad of the former German champions.
St. Pauli vs. Wolfsburg AI Prediction
The artificial intelligence system at Wettbasis, known as AI, also expects a very close and hard-fought match. The xG values are extremely close, and even in terms of win probabilities, there are only razor-thin advantages in favor of the Wolfsburg side. Despite—or perhaps because of—the starting point, the most attractive value in the St. Pauli vs. Wolfsburg AI prediction can therefore be identified in a draw.
St. Pauli – Statistics & Current Form
FC St. Pauli is currently in the tenth Bundesliga season of the club’s history. In eight of the nine seasons so far, the Kiezkickers have suffered a defeat on the final matchday. It remains to be seen whether this negative trend is a bad omen for Saturday. At the very least, the most recent results raise entirely justified doubts about Hamburg’s ability to avoid relegation. Nine winless matches in a row have already been mentioned.
In total, they have only 13 points from eight second-half matches—but that’s still five more than their upcoming opponent.
There’s little cause for optimism at FC St. Pauli
Even more concerning, however, is their offensive output. Blessin’s team has scored only 28 goals so far. The Kiezkickers last scored twice in a Bundesliga match on February 22. Looking back at the past nine games, Pauli has only put the ball over the opponent’s goal line five times. But that won’t matter this weekend. In 90 minutes, the cult club must deliver its best performance on the field, put the last few weeks behind them, and play for the win.
It might even help that the North Germans have slipped to 18th place since last week. The Hamburg team might feel more comfortable in the role of the underdog. However, never in the history of the Bundesliga has a team that was in last place going into the final matchday managed to avoid relegation. Nevertheless, I believe the home team is capable of exactly that, and therefore recommend the high odds on a home win from the Betano app ahead of the St. Pauli vs. Wolfsburg match.

Wolfsburg – Stats & Current Form
VfL Wolfsburg is having a season to forget this year. With 19 losses already, the Lower Saxony club has set a new negative club record for a Bundesliga season. The meager haul of just 26 points from 33 matchdays also underscores the Wolves’ poor form, as they are statistically having the worst Bundesliga season in the club’s history. At least their form has shown a slight upward trend on the road recently: For the first time in the 2026 calendar year, VfL remained unbeaten in two consecutive away matches, picking up four points in the process.
18th place in the second-half standings – 18th place in the final standings?
However, as already mentioned, the second-half record is particularly alarming. The Green-Whites have managed just eight points. 18th place is the logical consequence. Since the introduction of the three-point rule, only four teams have ever collected fewer points in a full Bundesliga second half of the season—most recently Darmstadt 98 in the 2023/24 season with seven points. Above all, the VfL lacked punch in attack for long stretches, while the defense repeatedly revealed major coordination issues.
Because there is a lot at stake this weekend and both teams, given their offensive struggles, will certainly want to avoid falling behind, I’m predicting that no more than four goals will be scored in the match between St. Pauli and Wolfsburg. Alternatively, you can bet that more goals will be scored after halftime.

St. Pauli – Wolfsburg Head-to-Head Record
The 2-1 win in the first leg was Wolfsburg’s first-ever victory against FC St. Pauli in the Bundesliga. Prior to that, there had been five draws in six meetings. Two of those came last season, when the clubs drew 1-1 at the Volkswagen Arena and 0-0 in a dismal match at the Millerntor.
However, another draw on Saturday is unlikely to be enough to reach the relegation playoff. Only Wolfsburg can hope for 16th place in the event of a draw, but only if Heidenheim fails to beat Mainz at home.
St. Pauli – Wolfsburg Prediction
The fate of two clubs will be decided in 90 minutes on Saturday afternoon. Who will jump into 16th place and earn the chance to play in the relegation playoff against the third-place team from the 2. Bundesliga? On paper, VfL Wolfsburg likely has the best chance, as they have the best goal difference among the trio. In other words: If the Wolves win at the Millerntor, the relegation playoff is virtually guaranteed. St. Pauli, meanwhile, definitely needs a home win and, at best, some help from Mainz, who are playing in Heidenheim.
Everything that has happened in recent weeks no longer matters this weekend as the Bundesliga heads into Matchday 34. The mind becomes more important than the feet, which is why I wouldn’t rule out a supposed upset in the form of a home win.
Even more interesting ahead of the St. Pauli vs. Wolfsburg finale, however, are the odds targeting either a home win or a road win. If you combine this rather unusual 1/2 bet with Under 4.5 goals, you get a solid 1.60, which I’m confidently backing with seven units.
