Will Sturm Graz kick off the CL qualifiers with a win?
As the Austrian runner-up, SK Sturm Graz has secured a promising starting position for the Champions League qualifiers. Thanks in large part to Aston Villa’s Europa League triumph combined with their fourth-place finish in the Premier League, the Graz side has moved into the group of seeded teams and will thus initially avoid facing the top-tier clubs in the second qualifying round. If the prediction that Ingolitsch’s squad will advance in the match between Sturm Graz and Heart of Midlothian comes true, the Styrians would already be guaranteed a spot in an international group stage.
However, the task will by no means be easy, as the Scots were locked in a thrilling title race with Celtic Glasgow right up until the end of the season and are among the most difficult unseeded opponents in the draw. In the match between Sturm Graz and Heart of Midlothian, my prediction still favors the Blackies. However, this depends on Sturm Graz securing a good result in the first leg on Tuesday evening in front of their home crowd at the Merkur-Arena.
Despite a strong finish to the season, Sturm Graz narrowly missed out on the Austrian league title. The Blackies remained unbeaten in 13 consecutive competitive matches across all competitions, but still finished second in the final standings, trailing LASK by just two points. The runners-up were particularly solid at home: their last competitive loss in front of their home crowd dates back to December 11, 2025, and in their past nine home games in the Bundesliga and Europa League, the Graz side has conceded just three goals. This defensive solidity is likely to be a decisive factor against Hearts as well.
Meanwhile, the Scots are traveling with plenty of confidence, but will likely need some time to come to terms with their dramatic loss of the championship. Hearts led the Premiership for much of the season and needed just one point against Celtic on the final matchday to clinch the title. However, after taking the lead themselves, the capital club conceded two late goals and lost the championship in a particularly bitter fashion.
To make matters worse, several key players—including top scorer and captain Lawrence Shankland, midfield dynamo Cammy Devlin, and starting goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow—have either left the club or are no longer part of the squad. This shake-up is likely to make the task even more difficult against SK Sturm Graz, a team that is particularly strong at home.
The Styrians boasted the best defense in the country during the 2025–26 Bundesliga season and impressed particularly in front of their home crowd with tremendous defensive stability. At the same time, it’s unlikely that Hearts will take big risks from the start in Graz. The Scots are likely to start by playing compactly on the road, closing down space, and—above all—avoiding an early deficit to put themselves in a good position for the second leg. In my view, this very scenario points to a close, tactically driven match with few goals, in which Sturm will at least not leave the field as the loser.

There has never been a competitive match between Sturm Graz and Heart of Midlothian. However, their recent European history slightly favors the Styrians. Sturm gained valuable experience in the Europa League last season, facing Scottish powerhouses Rangers and Celtic.
While they secured a 2-1 home win against Rangers, they suffered a narrow 1-2 away loss to Celtic. Hearts, on the other hand, have faced an Austrian club only once before, being eliminated by Austria Vienna in 1988.

They haven’t lost a competitive match at home since December 11, 2025, and the Styrians have conceded just three goals in their last nine home games across the Bundesliga and Europa League.
Pre-season preparations have also gone well so far, and with the signing of Nelson Weiper shortly before the start of the competitive season, the club’s management pulled off a real transfer coup that further boosts the quality of the offense. Although both teams are at a similar level of fitness and match rhythm at the time of this matchup—since both the Austrian and Scottish leagues don’t start their new seasons until the first weekend in August— the runner-up from Graz has the edge thanks to its greater international experience, home-field advantage, and significantly greater team chemistry.
