Will a single goal decide the outcome?
The 1-1 draw from the first leg is misleading. Porto controlled the match for long stretches. That doesn’t change much in the Nottingham vs. Porto prediction. Chances won’t decide this matchup. Whoever avoids more mistakes will advance to the semifinals of this Europa League season.
There isn’t much separating two of the best defensive teams in this Europa League season. Offensive drive is less decisive in our Nottingham vs. Porto prediction than structure and control. We see an advantage here for the Dragons.
The Portuguese side won the expected goals comparison relatively clearly in the quarterfinal first leg. Porto launched a lightning-fast counterattack less than a minute into the game, which ended with Terem Moffi missing an open chance. By the final whistle, the Dragons had a clear advantage in expected goals (2.04:0.62 xG).
The head-to-head matchup is nonetheless a clash between two impressive defenses. The Tricky Trees have conceded the fewest expected goals per game in the current competition (0.85). Right behind them are the Portitas, who are the second-best team in this category with 0.89 expected goals conceded per game.
Nottingham – Porto Head-to-Head Record
This isn’t the first time the two teams have faced off in this Europa League season. Before the first leg (1-1), they had already met during the group stage. At home, the Garibaldi Reds, then still under the guidance of Sean Dyche, won 2-0.
Both head-to-head matches thus ended with two goals. The situation heading into the second leg suggests we might even see fewer goals in regulation time. In the first leg, Porto once again demonstrated just how difficult it is to create clear-cut chances against the Dragons.

Nottingham – Porto Prediction
On average, opposing teams in this Europa League season have only managed 0.09 xG per shot against FC Porto—a top-two figure, surpassed only by FC Basel (0.08 xGA per shot). Based on the results so far, their strong defensive work is also evident.
Porto has conceded no more than one goal in ten of their eleven previous European matches this season. In addition to the head-to-head matchup, the relegation battle in the Premier League also plays a role. Nottingham is still fighting to avoid relegation and faces Burnley in a direct showdown this coming weekend.
Internally, it has likely been made clear that avoiding relegation is the top priority. This is one reason why Vitor Pereira is keeping a close eye on his best players’ minutes and implementing a form of load management. For this reason, we also expect the Tricky Trees to focus fully on defense and the transition game.
The hosts have defended their own penalty area excellently so far, allowing only 14.46 opponent ball touches per game in their own box—the best record among all Europa League participants who have started the season.
