Will Sascha defeat his clay-court nemesis?

As the top seed and defending champion, Alexander Zverev is naturally aiming to claim his fourth singles title at the BMW Open in Munich this week, following his victories in 2017, 2018, and 2025. After a shaky start—winning the deciding set against Miomir Kecmanovic only in a tiebreak—he recently secured an unchallenged 2-0 victory over Gabriel Diallo (6-1, 6-2), officially marking the German’s arrival in the tournament.

Nevertheless, in the match between Alexander Zverev and Francisco Cerundolo, the prediction that Sascha won’t let anything slip in the quarterfinals is very risky. After all, the Argentine lost only seven games in total during his two 2-0 victories over Sumit Nagal (6-2, 6-2) and Botic van de Zandschulp (6-3, 6-0).

Furthermore, the most recent meeting between the two players at the hard-court major in Miami three weeks ago, which Sascha won convincingly 2-0 (6-1, 6-2), should not obscure the fact that Francisco Cerundolo has won all three of their previous clay-court matches against the German number one. Unlike the Hamburg native, the Argentine has already secured his first singles title of 2026—on clay, of course, when he triumphed in Buenos Aires in February. Against this backdrop, we wouldn’t categorically rule out the defending German champion’s elimination, and recommend betting that Francisco Cerundolo will win at least one set.

It is also quite possible that this match between the local hero and the South American clay-court specialist will go the full distance of three sets and perhaps even include a tiebreak.

Alexander Zverev – Francisco Cerundolo Head-to-Head Record

Head-to-Head: 4:3

The two players have faced each other seven times so far, and with four wins, Alexander Zverev currently holds a narrow lead in their head-to-head record. The German has won the last four matches in a row against Francisco Cerundolo, though all four took place on hard courts. Sascha lost all three of his first matches against the Argentine on clay.

Alexander Zverev – Francisco Cerundolo Prediction

In their Round of 16 matches on Thursday, both players made short work of their opponents, each dropping only three games in a decisive 2-0 victory. At least in terms of momentum or form, there isn’t really a clear favorite. Accordingly, we would not want to make a prediction on the outcome of the match between Alexander Zverev and Francisco Cerundolo.

Although the German number one leads 4-3 in their head-to-head record, he has never defeated the Argentine clay-court specialist in a singles match on clay.

Consequently, the bet that the Argentine will win at least one set in this quarterfinal is highly favored.
