Will the Kempen native get back to form?

It was foreseeable that the grass-court season would be rather disappointing for Daniel Altmaier. After all, the player from Kempen prefers to play on clay, where he has achieved his greatest successes. In 2020 and 2025, he reached the round of 16 at the French Open. In 2023, he reached the quarterfinals at a Masters tournament in Madrid. In 2026, however, he hasn’t even performed particularly well on his favorite surface, which is why, in the match between Daniel Altmaier and Hugo Gaston, betting on a victory for the German—who is returning to clay in Bastad, Sweden, after his first-round exit at Wimbledon—is by no means a sure thing.

It should be noted, however, that Hugo Gaston is also having a thoroughly disappointing season. The Frenchman, who has since been competing mainly in Challenger tournaments that do not count toward the ATP Tour rankings, has officially played only seven ranked singles matches on the ATP Tour in 2026, winning just one of them. Against this backdrop, the prediction that Daniel Altmaier will win his match against Hugo Gaston is essentially a foregone conclusion.

However, should the Frenchman, contrary to expectations, take a 1-0 lead, he must be considered capable of winning the match 2-0, especially given Altmaier’s recent injury-related withdrawal in Eastbourne. To account for this possibility as well, we therefore recommend betting that this opening match in Bastad will be decided in under 2.5 sets.

One factor in the Frenchman’s favor is that, after his first-round exit at Wimbledon, he used the second week of the tournament to spontaneously play a Challenger tournament on clay in Braunschweig. There, he reached the final. However, he went on to lose that match 1-2 to Jan Choinski on Sunday after leading 1-0, and the 0-6 loss in the second set in particular certainly didn’t do much for his confidence. What made it especially bitter: his first serve landed in only 41 percent of all cases.

Daniel Altmaier – Hugo Gaston Head-to-Head Record

Head-to-Head: 1–1

The two players have faced each other twice so far in ranked singles matches on the ATP Tour, and their head-to-head record stands at 1–1. While Hugo Gaston prevailed 2-0 in a close three-set match during their first meeting in Kitzbühel in 2024, Daniel Altmaier returned the favor a year later in Metz. After coming back from a 0-1 set deficit to win the second set convincingly 6-0, the Frenchman subsequently retired due to injury.

Daniel Altmaier – Hugo Gaston Prediction

Overall, the 2026 season was very disappointing for both players. Nevertheless, the Frenchman was even more of a letdown overall. Daniel Altmaier also has the advantage of playing simpler and more efficient tennis. He’s in good physical shape, and with his powerful game, his preference for clay, and his topspin, he should have the edge. Hugo Gaston, on the other hand, is known for his tricky tennis. However, trying to throw the physically strong and generally tactically smart German off his rhythm with drop shots is unlikely to be very successful.

There is, however, a small question mark because the German just had to retire due to injury in Eastbourne and subsequently performed very poorly at Wimbledon. Should the Frenchman take the first set, a comeback by the player from Kempen would be rather unlikely. Therefore, the best value comes from betting that this opening match in Bastad will be decided in two sets one way or another. For under 2.5 sets, Bet-at-home is offering odds of 1.58 on Daniel Altmaier vs. Hugo Gaston, which we’re betting five out of ten units on.
