Will the Spaniard’s slump continue?

Two players for whom the ATP Tour’s grass-court season has been disappointingly lackluster, as expected, are now returning to clay ahead of the US Open Series. In Gstaad, the Swiss Open will feature a Spanish-German matchup in the first round, and our Pedro Martinez vs. Yannick Hanfmann prediction calls for a clear victory for the Karlsruhe native, who faces an opponent who could hardly be in worse form. The 29-year-old Spaniard—once ranked No. 36 in the ATP—has slipped to No. 134 in the ATP world rankings and most recently failed to advance past the first round of qualifying at Wimbledon before being eliminated last week at a Challenger tournament in Romania by the world No. 284.

Admittedly, the 2026 season has by no means been a milestone for Yannick Hanfmann either. The player from Fächerstadt, who had a deep run at an ATP Tour clay-court tournament in Santiago, Chile, in late February, came within a hair’s breadth of claiming his first singles title on the ATP Tour during the golden autumn of his career. In the grand final, however, he was narrowly defeated by Luciano Darderi, 6-7, 5-7.

Nevertheless, for the match between Pedro Martinez and Yannick Hanfmann, our prediction clearly favors a victory for the German, who has, after all, recorded 15 wins in 27 singles matches on the ATP Tour in 2026. His Spanish opponent, on the other hand, has managed just two wins in total during a thoroughly disappointing season. Given that the Karlsruhe native has also won his last two singles matches against the Spaniard in straight sets (2–0), we therefore recommend betting on a 2–0 victory for the German.

The draw in Gstaad is certainly not an easy one. However, his second-round opponent, third-seeded Valentin Vacherot—with the exception of his deep run at the Monte Carlo Masters, where he reached the semifinals of a Masters tournament—hasn’t played all that often on clay and could therefore be a beatable opponent. We expect the German to come out with great determination, as he’ll certainly be looking to get off to a good start.

Pedro Martinez – Yannick Hanfmann Head-to-Head Record

Head-to-Head: 1:3

The two players have faced each other four times, and in three of those four matches, Yannick Hanfmann prevailed over the Spaniard. Their most recent encounter took place in 2024 in Chengdu on hard court, with the German winning 7-6, 6-2.
Their most recent meeting on clay was even more decisive, with the player from Fächerstadt winning 6-2, 6-0 in Santiago, Chile, in 2023.

Pedro Martinez – Yannick Hanfmann Prediction

Things have been going completely wrong for Pedro Martinez for quite some time now. Anyone who thought his first-round qualifying exit at Wimbledon against the world No. 140 would be his new low was proven wrong last week in Romania, when the Valencian fell to the world No. 284 on clay at a Challenger tournament in Iasi, Romania.

The 29-year-old won just 58 percent of points on his first serve in that match. It’s hard to imagine that such dismal statistics will be enough to stand up to Yannick Hanfmann, who just a little over four months ago reached the final of an ATP Tour clay-court tournament.

Given this context, we expect the player from Karlsruhe—who has already made short work of the Spaniard in their last two meetings with two straight 2-0 victories—to win this match in straight sets, 2-0.
